Removing wiper motor
#1

Please can someone, anyone tell me how to get to the bolts that hold in the wiper motor? I have been stumped for two weeks and am not making any progress. Has anybody out there done it who can tell me how to do this? I would truly appreciate any help. I can take it to the dealer but I already have some issues and I was hoping to save some cash doing this first. For anyone who can help, thank you very much.

Front yes?

On my old 87 944 I think I had to get to the bolts from under the dash! Yes, it's bolted from the back...gotta love those german engineers!

At least, that's what I think I did, that was back in 99... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Thank you silver bullet, but the 968 is different. Shamus on 968.net gave me a link to a site in the UK which had the instructions. It was still difficult and I may have created an additional problem by turning the wiper drive crank which is turned by a gear turned by a worm gear. I think the hub of the nylon gear cracked. But thank you for the suggestion. I really appreciate it.

Can you forward me the link to the website you mentioned? I'm in the same situation, but haven't attempted to remove it yet. I'm still waiting for the part to arrive.

Thanks

I can give you the idea right here. I found that the easiest thing to do is to remove the blower cover, the blower motor(do not disconnect it) and the whole base of the blower. The blower cover has 12 phillipshead screws and the base has 7 or 8 8mmhex screws. The base is held is with a pliant sealer. Once it is out, the whole wiper assembly can come out. It is held in with 2 10mm hex bolts. Then you can turn it upside down and disconnect the arms and unbolt the motor.

I forgot to say you must remove the plastic cover that starts at the base of the windshield and ends at a piece of weather strip runnimg across the enginge compartment. You have to remove the wipers to get this off. It is attached with adhesive tape which I found to be holding that plastic very strongly.

Someone might say it is not necessary to remove the blower, but the extre effort there is well worth saving the frustration without doing so.

By the way, I found out today my motor was not bad. I was blowing fuses(30A) and I figured the motor and I wanted to have it tested. The auto electric guy said they do not do wiper motors because of the number of leads that are not identifiable. The motor ran fine out of the car. I put it back together and at each step I tried it and it worked. I bolted the ground and the clamp that holds the harness to the motor, tried it again and the fuse blew. I disconnected the motor and put the ignition switch on position 1 and the wiper fuse blew. SO that is where I am now. That may be more than you needed to know, but I was wondering why you think you need a motor and that maybe we had similar symptons. The motor is available from Sunset Porsche but it has to come from Germany.

I hope this helps. If you have any other questions or if I made something less than clear, please ask.

Wow, seems like I'm in for some real fun! Didn't think it would be that involved to change a simple item.

My problem isn't blowing fuses. I think that if you are continuing to blow them, there's a problem with the ground of the motor. Especially if all the wiring is correct, and there are no other open circuits. The wirning harness in the motor may seem fine and operate out of the car, but I'll bet the wiring is failing and/or shorted out - causing the problem with the ground.

What I have is a motor that sounds like a grinding machine. When I bought the car (last month) I immediately changed out the wiper blades cause I knew I was going to encounter thunderstorms on my cross country trip to California. Naturally, I hadn't been on the road but two hours before I got the first storm. Turned on the wipers and thought I was crushing stones. The wipers worked fine (although there still was too little rubber to windshield contact), but the sound was unreal.

Once I got home I had my Porsche mechanic check it out and he told me the wiper motor was bad ( I don't know if I'm a total believer, but I have no idea either). I ordered one from Sunset and it'll be here in a month. We'll see if this really solves the problem. If not, must be the gears, eh?
