Winscreen Wiper Chatter
#1

Having been the wettest year here in Brisbane for probably half a century, I have been caught out in the rain more than normal. My wipers make two or three perfect sweeps before spiraling into an ever incresing teeth rattling shudder on each successive sweep. It does not seem to be the blades (I assumed that this was the problem and replaced them) and the sweep remains neat and clean. The problem is elsewhere.

I couldn't find any articles on this. If anyone else has had (and solved) this problem, would you mind posting a checklist of items I should check/service.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers

Peter R

Sorry, I accidently posted this in the wrong forum (had been admiring wheels) and cannot for the life of me find out how change the topic of even to delete and re-post

Mine did similar but I could see that the arm had play in it. It wasn't so much noisy as it was ineffective at moving the water off the windshield. The problem was fixed when I tightened the bolt at the fulcrum of the arm.

My wiper springs on the 944S were getting weak and I was getting wiper lift at higher speeds with associated chatter. My wipers were OK when sitting still, though. I didn't get a chance to replace them before I sold the car because I wasn't able to find them separately, and I was hesitant to buy entire new wiper arms just for the springs. Lift your wiper arms and at least see if maybe the springs are getting tired.

I assume you still have to OEM wipers with the wind deflectors on them? Without them you will get wiper lift.

Thanks for the replies. I have OEM wipers and blades and the chatter happens even when the car is stationary. The nuts seem tight. There must be some play that I cannot see in the the workings somewhere.

Thanks,

Peter

I hope it's not something under the plastic cover. I don't know what it costs, or even if you can get it anymore, but it's sure to be crispy and not come off in one piece.

Try to find some silicone wiper blades. These are much more pliable and quiet. My 968 blades are nice and quiet, but the ones on my 944S are just as you describe. I need to replace them.

Thanks Ryan, I think that I will head down that route next.

Any brand/model suggestions for the silicon blades?

Thanks,

I just got a set of mono blade wipers at ACE hardware. They only attach the blade to the arm at the central point. Don't remember the name, but they were $19 each and were the only ones that were designed that way.

They work great and do not chatter or lift at freeway speeds.

OK, did as everyone suggested and installed my new blades. Seems like the problem is somewhere in the RHS (drivers side) motor or linkages.

It almost seems as it the RHS wiper either

(1) gets out of synch smomehow (if that is even possible) or

(2) has a degree of play that worsens as it warms up

This might be harder to solve than I had hoped.

My odometer stopped working last week also. It is a bugger that you have to pull the speedo apart to determine whether you need a 12 or 16 tooth gear - particularly when you have to then order it from OS and wait for the post!!

Thanks for all the feedback.

The problem is with the ball joint on the linkage. It is sloppy and the linkage gets the 'wobbles' after a few sweeps. Anyone else had this problem and/or suggest a fix?

It looks like the linkage comes as a single unit???

Finally fixed his one. The ball joints on the arms of the wiper assembly were shot. I purchased a 'like new' one on eBay but it was worse.

Anyhow, I have replaced the arms with tie rods from a Mercedes. Similar ball joint arrangements that seems to be a good solution. We will see howit goes over time.

Thanks for all the ideas.

Cheers,

Gotta love it when that happens. Care to share the source?
