The arm is limp in the splines. Tightening did not fix it. Do the arms just wear out? That would be a slight pain, but not as much as having to replace a post.

sounds like it's stripped or cracked - pull it off and look for cracks - if it's cracked you're definitely screwed - if it's stripped, you're pretty much screwed too, and nothing much will work and hold up for long, but you could try a wrap or two of thread tape

I read on another list for some other car that one guy had used JB Weld to build up some material on the post. Then used a small file, like a set of jewelers files to reshape the splines a bit. He said it worked, but I agree with flash that I wouldn't assume this as a permanent fix and may fail again, or may not fail.

Well, it's the wiper transmission/frame. The driver's side post joint no longer will hold the arm. $225 new - and none in the US. Oklahoma Foreign has one for $29, but I hate putting 20 year old parts that wear out on the car. $155 from Sunset, but it will take 2 weeks. It is also a 2-3 hour job that may require removing the windshield.

if you have to remove the windshield, do yourself a favor and install a new one - i'm getting into the habit of replacing mine every 5 years - i am stunned at how much of a difference it makes in visibility, especially at night

Good news - replacement does not require windshield removal. And, a buddy and I jury-rigged a temporary repair (reconnecting the ball joint and arm by drilling a hole and installing a cotter pin). Also figured out that we can replace the transmission when it arrives, though it will be a few hours work.

According to both Sunset and the local dealer, there were only two of these in stock in Germany. This is the kind of issue that worries me about long-term survival of the 968 as a species. Unique parts are slowly disappearing (though this specific part is 944/968).

Speaking of parts becoming NLA- do we have a thread here for that, to list all the parts that are or are becoming NLA? If we don't might be a good sticky.
