Got pulled over tonight and received a fix it ticket for dark window tint. Any one know a good way of getting the tint off? I have 72 hours to take the car to the police station and prove I fixed it.

I had to remove tint from my car (not my 968) and tried all kinds of methods. Finally did a web search, and found that warm soapy water (i think it was dishwashing detergent) made the job very easy. Once you get even a little edge to work from, the adhesive dissolves easily. Much better than a razor blade, peeling, solvents, gunk remover, whatever.



I just did a Google search, and this sounds like what I did. I did not have to use any steel wool, and the razor blade on the adhesive after it was wet with the soapy water was very easy (although a little messy).



Removing Tint from side windows:



Removing tint from side windows is fairly easy. First attempt to peel film off from a corner. You may need to use the scraper blade to scrape up a piece . The film may pull off in one piece or in small strips. Keep using the scraper blade as needed to aid in pulling off the film.



Once all the film is removed, spray the window well and glide the scraper blade along the glass scraping up the glue. Remember to keep the window wet, and do the removal in the shade. Change the blade often you may need up to two blades per window. This process can get messy, so use a lot of paper towels to clean and discard the adhesive.



You may use the steel wool to clean up any remaining adhesive left from scraping.

I was just getting on my son for the tint he had applied to his car. I don't think a shop should be allowed to apply a tint that is not legal. If you get a ticket, they should have to remove it. My 2 cents.

Soap water and a razor should get it off, the shops will tell you that XX% is the max by law and anything more is legal for public roads. At least thats what they do here, called CYA.

A professional "steamer" will take it off pronto.



I just removed an old school tint job and hood bra off a client's car using a pro grade steamer.



If you can't source one to borrow, they're available at commercial rentals.

I'm going to rant slightly (hopefully prematurely). Randbems started this thread by asking a question. He got answers - quickly and informatively. However, by all appearances, he hasn't returned to the thread he started. That bothers the heck out of me. Why ask the question if you're not going to even see, much less use, the answers?



Now, this might be premature because there's still a few hours left before the 72-hour clock he said he has to remove the tint expires. So, maybe he's out there right now, using the advice he received, and then he'll acknowledge tomorrow. We'll see.

I did get my window tint off and took care of the ticket. I used a garment steamer and it took quite a few hours to get off.



Not that I have to justify myself to you but I was busy living my life. I suggest you do the same.

i'm not going to single anybody out, or make any snap judgments based on one incident - many people come here, take from the forum, and don't even say thank you - it comes with the anonymous nature of the internet - courtesy and manners are often cast aside



i'm also going to take a wild stab that since this ticket was for window tint, that the recipient was likely young, and probably a victim of our degrading public school system and the internet - i find the social behavior of many young people to be lacking, especially on the internet - the prevailing attitude seems to be "they don't know me, and can't find me, so who cares what i say?" this is the exact opposite of what should be the protocol - especially in a venue like this, we tend to eventually meet each other - what we type and how we behave should be considered carefully - people tend to read with their own voice, and not the writer's - failure to recognize this often leads to misunderstanding - when i was in school, we were taught to read from the author's perspective, and not our own - this is not done nearly as much anymore - isolationism is becoming the norm - however, i too have often been guilty of flying off the handle, or behaving badly - i have suffered the consequences - live and learn

Actually, just like the other guy, you are wrong. Why are you guys so quick to through judgment out on people?



I am not a young kid, though I have a few. I got a ticket for the window tint because I just bought the car, in another state, and did not know what level of tint was on it. I have only had the car two weeks and I have seen plenty of people with tint just as dark as or darker than me. I am not flying off the handle either, I just don't like people talking crap about me or accusing me of things. I had a lot of stuff to do before I could get back on and post what I did to get the tint off. Also, I am rarely on the Internet and would say any of this to any one of your faces.



I am appreciative of the advice I have gotten here, especially since this is my first Porsche, but I am not going to kiss any ones feet. I certainly do not have anything to prove so I am letting this issue go.

I'd learned about how to remove tint for almost xactly the same reason. I purchased a car from out-of-state and it had tint on all the windows. I knew it wouldn't pass inspection, so I first looked into private inspection. While I was doing that, though, I found that nighttime driving with the tinted front windows was difficult. So, I decided to remove the tint. That's where I learned about the soapy water technique, after struggling with several other approaches.



Glad you got your problem solved.

Okay, this is the last comment on this from me. I am not saying your advice was wrong. I am saying you were wrong for accusing me of blowing off the advice of all of you and not being appreciative. I am appreciative and am glad there is a place I can come to help me figure out my 968. Thanks for providing input.

ok - so i made a bad guess - we have been getting a lot of new members from 944 boards, and they tend to be mostly the under 30 youngsters - my bad



jumping up and down with strongly worded statements like "Actually, just like the other guy, you are wrong. Why are you guys so quick to through judgment out on people?" is exactly how fights get started - i think everyone here has been misread



i think we all need to take a step back and relax a bit - i for one, was never wound up, never made any judgments, in fact specifically said in my post that i was not making any, and was only making a speculation



as a point of etiquette, again NOT directed to any individual, and merely for the benefit of others who might not know it, when you ask for advice, get it, and it works, the correct thing to do is to say "thank you"

I got no problem with that; I just might not get around to saying thank you for a few days. My wife has not yet warmed up to me spending a lot of time with the car yet. Plus I have a lot of stuff going on so if I don't get back on for a while it is because I am not able to not because I am ungrateful. Thanks.

Gee, I have been skipping this topic on my unread post section because I thought removing window tint would be boring....was I wrong. this is the most excitement in the forums in a long time!





Randbems: did the local law require you to remove tint from just the front windows? Often , you are allowed to keep the rears tinted for privacy/sun protection/etc...



In the michigan laws below...it never really states that you can;t dark tint the whole fronts, but you CAN only tint the top 4 inches of the front, and the fronts can be up to 35% reflective. Man, that would look like shzit.



Michigan Window Tint Law

Michigan Tint Law Enacted: 2000

HOW DARK CAN WINDOW TINT BE IN MICHIGAN?



Darkness of tint is measured by Visible Light Transmission percentage (VLT%). In Michigan, this percentage refers to percentage of visible light allowed in through the combination of film and the window.



Windshield Non-reflective tint is allowed on the top 4 inches of the windshield.

Front Side Windows Any darkness can be applied 4" inches from the top of the window.

Back Side Windows Any darkness can be used.

Rear Window Any darkness can be used.



HOW REFLECTIVE CAN THE TINT BE IN MICHIGAN?



Similar to sunglass lenses, some tinting film contain metallic elements that help in reflecting incoming light and reducing the glare and heat generated by visible light.



Front Side Windows Must not be more than 35% reflective.

Back Side Windows Must not be more than 35% reflective.



OTHER MICHIGAN RULES AND REGULATIONS



Restricted Colors No colors of tint are explicitly banned.

Side Mirrors No restrictions.

Certificate Requirements Manufacturers of film do NOT need to certify the film they sell in the state.

Sticker Requirements No sticker to identify legal tinting is required.

Medical Exemption State allows medical exemptions for special tint. For more details about the specific terms of the exemption, consult your state law.

To defend Randbems apparent lack of appreciation, I have occasionally posted a question here and waited a few days for the various response to settle in, so to speak. Then I would take the advice and proceed with my repair/diagnosis, etc. When I am done I return and post my results and thank those that contributed. All in all this, with the complications of life, this can easily take me week or longer. But the time lag, at least for me, does not mean I am not grateful for the help.

Ah, and now I see how searching for a solution to a technical issue can lead one into navigating through a few posts of " vomit " , LOL.

So I'm now faced with this task ( removing tint from the windows ) and it would seem that either warm soapy water OR steam should make the job somewhat effortless. I guess then a combination of the two methods might produce a very quick and easy result..? Internet search brought up a couple of YouTube videos where just using a clothes steamer the tint was easily pulled off, without leaving any residue (glue ) requiring further cleaning, and all of that was done in a matter of one or two minutes. It looked too easy so I'm a bit skeptical ; could be that the tint might not have been on those windows long enough to "bake in"

Anyone else here who has removed tint and can validate the effectiveness of the steam or soapy water methodology , or otherwise suggest an even easier way to get the job done ?
