Front window defroster
#1

When driving home the other day, I needed to turn on the defroster to defog the windshield. To my surprise, it blew incredibly hot air. Is that normal?
My A/C blows nice and cold.
Curious. . .

I am by no means an "expert" on the 968, but the "special" defrost button does exactly that: it blows full blast at high temp. It works like a charm when you want to quickly get the window cleared!
Enjoy "discovering" all the little details of your 968!

This is correct...and true with BMW and Mercedes, at least on the older cars...must be a German thing!

Also, for a little more info, the top slider on the HVAC control panel controls air flow for the defrost vents. The bottom slider controls air flow to the floor vents. The vertical slide with the little defrost logo at the top will open or shut the main "in your face" vents. By different combinations of positions of all of the various levers, you can direct air flow where it's needed. Most of the time, you'll end up with a spring/summer setting and a fall/winter setting and then use the magic defrost button to clear the windshield. Hope that helps.

The Germans had a mandate for a number of years but not sure if it's still in effect. You had to provide a button or clearly indicated means of the optimal heat/fan speed/ducting to provide the best defrost/demist possible; was a safety feature and I think a good one. I had that on an '89 Jetta but it was only indicated where to set the controls whereas Porsche stuck it all on one button.
That was my first lesson when I bought my very first 944. That button was pushed down at the dealership when I drove off. I started the 30 minute drive home and no matter what I did to the heat/fan controls I couldn't stop the underworld from entering the car, all I could do was roll down all the windows and pant. I got home and finally pressed that little square button, which as it turns out had gotten a little sticky and wouldn't pop out on the way home.

Dave - So you and your 944 started your relationship in a "hot and sweaty" way!
