Rear Brake Upgrade???
#1

Well, as you all know, one project just sort of "morphs" into the next!

I have an opportunity to purchase a set of new 996 GT "Big Red" Rear Calipers for about 1/2 the price from Porsche! And, since I am going to be messing around under there mounting up my new Suspension upgrades, it begs the question... why not do the Brakes, which are the original calipers, with almost new rotors and standard pads.

So, the obvious questions...

1. Will the Racemark Adaptors made for the front 993 "Big Red" converion (which I will get around to at some point) work to mount the 996 GT Big Reds to the rear mounting points??? Or, failing that, are there adaptors out there to mount up such brakes to our 968s?

2. Can I continue to use the stock rear rotors (almost new!!!), or do I need to find a rotor to match the 996's, and if so, does such an animal exist?

3. Are the Pagid "Orange" Pads available for the 996 GT Big Reds, or do they take some sort of exotic "over the top" style of Pad that nobody sells?

4. Or, should I just paint my stock rear calipers red to match the 993 Big Reds up front, and save myself the expense and trouble? I have heard that the stock rear brakes are more than sufficient for most DE track events... so no real need to do this, other than to match the fronts! Again, all comments appreciated!

These cars are ADDICTIVE! One project just keeps leading to more!!!

I'm curious as to why you think you need more rear brake?

If you really want some more brake back there change the proportioning valve. The rears are not a limitation, and you'll add unsprung weight.

Unless of course you just want the look of the large brakes behind the wheels, and they will look cool, then go for it.

You hit it right on the mark! Absolutely NO reason for more rear brakes, other than to match up the look of the Big Reds on the front!

Interestingly, Porsche didn't even change the stock 968 rear brakes on the M030 setup... just the fronts are upgraded to the 928S4's, so there is no reason to change, other than for the look...

And, since the price is right, why not? IF it is doable, that is!

I already have the 17" 996TT Alloys, so might as well stuff some big brakes in there, if I can do it without completely rebuilding the back end of the car... BUT... no one may have tried this yet! Fun to be the Pioneer...

Did you go with the 5/33 ratio Proportioning Valve? Is it a 928 Part, or after market? This was highly recommended in a post from the Rennlist site, IIRC. Figured I would do that too... you know... once you start, you can't just do one thing!

In any case, it's not so much about "function" and more about "form"... I have a chance to buy the set of 4 Calipers for a good price, and would want to use fronts and rears...

BTW, received the front Turn Signal Lens today! Nice Christmas Present! Perfect in all respects!

Thanks again! Another "do it in the Spring" project! Wife asked what I needed THAT for, and I explained the 968 had a minor crack in the original lens... Her response was something to the effect that wasn't the ONLY thing that was cracked around here! ;>))

yes - 5/33 - yes, 928 part - pain to install, and made a mess, but was worth it

glad you got the lens ok
