Problem with Paragon sourced Hyperco springs?
#1

I ordered the 190-230# Hyperco springs from Paragon, gotta love that 20% off!

The question is, are these progressive springs?

They sure don't look it. They look as linear as the day is long. See attached photos, if I can successfully attach them that is.

Thoughts?

Nevermind, upon further inspection there is no doubt that these are linear springs. I'll update as to the swap progress.

Easy mistake to make I guess, as there is no marking information on them as to what they are or which end is up.

OK, so the guy at Paragon swears these are progressive springs, but I want some verification before installing them. Has anyone installed these?

Rob, these springs are copies of the H&R springs. When the H&R springs became scarce we contracted with Hyperco to produce them for us. I still have a set of the H&R springs so I'll send one of each back to Hyperco and get them checked and let you know.

prgressive springs create that increasing rate by coils collapsing and binding at variying intervals - essentially they change the coil rate, either by reducing the spacing of a few coils, or varying coil diameter so that as the spring compresses, one coil contacts another, thereby reducing the number of remaining active coils, and consquently increasing the effective rate of the spring

190-230 is not much of a variance, so it may not be immediately visible - i can't open the pic, so, measure the center to center of the wire, so as to determine the spacing between the coils - what you are looking for is a set of coils on one end with a slightly smaller spacing than the other end

Thanks Jason -

If these are indeed the progressives, I guess I'm just not sure which way to install them. Hard to tell which end is supposed to be up.

Let me know what you find out,

Thanks!

Indeed, I'm looking for that smaller spacing, but its not immediately visible. I'll have to get the 'ol ruler out.

Cheers!

as long as the coil diameter is the same on all coils, it won't matter which way is up - if the coil diameters are different on each end, then put the small one at the top - otherwise, i always use the lettering up, just for aesthetics

Upon measurement, the distance between all the coils is exactly the same, as is the diameter at both ends.

then, unless they've come up with some molecular density varying compound, that's a linear spring - count the number of active coils, measure the diamter of the coil (center to center), measure the wire diameter, and the free length - then i can tell you the spring rate

I have a set of the progressive H&R springs and if memory serves, there was no obvious gradation in coil-diameter or coil-spacing from one end to the other.

If I have the time, I'll pull them off the shelf over the weekend and make some actual measurements.
