Power Steering Compensating Pipe Question
#1

While working under my '94 968 I noticed that one side of the Power Steering compensating pipe was disconnected. I think it's been that way for about 1500 miles (since I last looked anyway). Is this bad? Anything I can do to mitigate damage from dust going in? Does oil/grease need to be in there? It looked pretty dry.

Harvey that sounds like the pipe that equalizes air pressure between the two sides of the steering rack as the piston inside moves from lock to lock. As I understand it, if you didn't have this tube you'd end up blowing out one of your steering rack boots.

I would quickly purchase another - or clean and reinsert the one you have. Dirt will enter the rack system and compromise the internal seals.

Apex is very much correct. It lead to the early replacement of my steering rack last summer. One additional thought, I spoke with the lead tech at the local dealer, and he suggested zip-tieing the end in to prevent them blowing off. It's just cheapo plastic and the barbs on it don't last long. There isn't any possible damage from having them secured that I can think of, and now I don't have problems with the compensation line coming loose and compomising the seals in my rack.

I like the zip lock idea. Also, I also will clean the tube first and hope for the best. If the rack goes out prematurely, I'll just rebuild it or replace. The last 1500 miles was mostly highway miles. Thanks, guys.
