Belt Question
#1

My car has been setting up for about a year. I'm looking at getting it out for this fall but need to do some maintenance. I'm going to do the belts (did them 5 years ago). The car has about 25K miles on it. Do I need to change the idles and tensioners also? I'm not planning on doing the water pump but will change the coolant.

Also, I have a front strut leaking. What’s a good replacement?

belts obviosuly overdue at 5 years - good call - idlers and tensioners would be dependent on condition and if they were replaced 5 years ago - if they were replaced then and are clean and spin freely, but not sloppy, then they should be fine

many replace the front struts with the koni yellow sports

I totally agree with flash. Don't forget to inspect all the seals from the front when in there.

Koni Yellows are great - put them all around.

I would bet seal inspection won't do much good until after you run it for a while. I would do the belts and if the rollers and pump seem okay, drive it and watch for leaks.

Other fairly easy replacements you might consider, just due to the fact they are known "weak" points:
- Stainless clutch hose from RS Barn
- Heater control valve
- Check oil seperator return line

What is a oil seperator return line?

I went with Porsche on the belts. Probably a waste but I only do this every 5 - 6 years and will feel better about it. At least I will a couple of months after paying the credit card bill.

I'm also a maintenance manager at a high speed packaging company. We use tons of toothed belts and to be honest we do not get good service out of the gates brand. Different application I know.

I haven’t checked the heater control valve or the clutch hose yet. I will definitely go aftermarket on these.
