squealing sound from engine and occasional hesitat

noticed a squealing sound coming from engine .gets louder during exceleration and then stops . most noticable during idle. its also louder when the ac is on. Wanted to know if it could possible be a belt or maybe waterpump. belts seem fine .dont know bout timing. also i turned my ac on the other day and the car started hesitating like a belt was slipping .shut ac off but still does it occasionaly? not sure what that could be but it doesnt do it all the time just seems when i accelerate quickly or going up and incline? Need answers quick i dont want something to break on me !

It it is the AC / alternator belt. Tighten it up and the squeel will go away. If the blelt looks cracked and dry, replace it while you are down there.

How do you 'tighten it up'? Is there an adjustment somewhere for that?

There is a turnbuckle under the 968 that adjusts the tensions on each of the accessory belts. It is easiest to get to them if you remove the middle plastic drip pan and work from below.

Also check your pulleys with the belt off. I had a similar problem that was caused by a bad alternator pulley. To adjust tension you will need two 17mm wrenches for the A/C/Alternator belt, and two 13mm wrenches for the power steering. Be careful when tensioning, it's really easy to bend the eyes on the turnbuckle or strip the threads.

when adjusting your belts, make sure you loosen the main mounting bolt a touch - making the adjustment without doing that is asking to break that point

what about the hesitation while driving even when idle like the belts is slipping so much the engine wants to stale. mechanics checking tommaorw to busy today but drove the car today thought it was gonna stale out on me. i checked the tension on the belts they seemed fairly tight . if its not a belt what other possiblitys can it be?

When the mechanic checks the belt, also have him check the AC compressor for any signs that the compressor is siezing. That could explain the squeel and the stalling. If the compressor is about to sieze, it will be very hard to turn by hand, probably impossible, and may need to be replaced.



Get that sorted first and if the stalling persists, then there is a a whole other list of things to check for hesitation and stalling.

wow ! I guess my explainations were off of the possible problems. found out the problem was a cracked valve cover which was causing oil to get into the spark plugs. Not good. 750$ later got a new valve cover , spark plugs , distributor cap , ignition wires , fuel filter , air filter , and oil change . Get it back monday should be running smooth !

Glad it turned out to be relatively minor. New plugs wires and filters never hurt anyone anyway. I imagine the biggest part of that was the parts cost rather than labor. I try to do my own wrenching whenever I can. I am after all a lowly enlisted man. If I didn't do the work myself, I wouldn't be able to do anything but maintain the car. 8)

Three things I learned in the Navy. How to swear, how to drink, and how to chew heinie like a pro. An important skill here at the brig. Of course, I don't swear or drink like I did when I was a young(er) sailor, but I think that's just part of growing up.
