MY drivers door hinge nut is coming off
#1

I just noticed that the drivers side door hinge was moving as i openened and closed the door. I think the nut which was probaly welded to the back side of the door pillar has broken the weld. What i mean is the back side where the allen key bolt goes thru the hinged mechanissim and then into a permantantly mounted nut. That is now loose and cannot be tightened. Any suggestions as to how to get to the nut. There is grey carpet or side carpet covering the hood & rear glass release, If i remove this carpet do I get to see behind the door pillar?

I am afraid if I just take off the bolt the nut will fall of and rattle behind the pillar. So getting access to the nut first is a primary concern.

I had to have my upper door hinge on the drivers side welded in place after the metal in that area suffered a fatigue failure. The repair work was all accomplished from outside of the car. I don't believe there is access to the backside of the door pillar from inside the car. You might have to remove the front wheel and the inner fender liner to gain access.

Not what you want to hear, BUT there have been several old posts about the hinge nut coming loose on the 944's. The cure was to remove the side carpet, cut out the area forward of the bad nut, weld the nut back in place, and weld the cut out piece back in place. The easy way is just what Chris had done to his hinge, not pretty but OK on a race car.

why wouldn't you just remove the fender, thereby gaining access to the area, and then repair as needed?

I agree with Flash. Great access with the fender taken off. I learned this with the gull wing car.

Why would i not just remove the fender?

Well for the first reason I do not know how, and for the 2nd reason I do not know how. LOL.

Would I have to repaint?

Would there be body damage? etc etc etc

All of this is easy if you know how to work on the car. But for many of us out here we take the car to a mechanic and pay and pay ..........................

i explained fender removal in a thread about a fiberglass fender project i was working on.

you would not have to repaint, as long as you didn't screw anything up in the process. there would be no damage as long as you didn't screw anything up in the process.

removing a fender takes about an hour. installation takes about half that.

Hi Flash, I used the "Search Tool" but could not find any reference or mention on your fender removal post you mention above. I found an old post on R.L. about the door stop nuts that should work for the door hinge nuts by using a Nutsert.

Well I guesss this forum will not accept a post from R.L. or ever the name. You can go to R.L. and Search for "getting at inside of door jam" by Cyberpunky.

i'd have to go looking for it, but it's a thread about fiberglass fenders. it's not about removal of an OEM fender. however, i did talk about how it's done within that thread. i think it's a "fixed headlight conversion" thread

always use the "more search options" button, and not just the search block.

OK I first took my 968 to my mechanic who said take it to a body shop. And then my body shop, a place that works on Porsches Ferrias Mercedes etc, in other words the expensive cars, said that he felt that removing the fender would not help as the pillar is solid and has no opening to the bolt. So who is right? Has anybody ever actually done this on a coupe, and a road car, perhaps have some pictures of the pillar with the fender off.
