Belt adjustment struts

I was doing a front end reseal and of course had to remove my power steering pump and the belt for the A/C. I got to the adjustment struts and could not for the life of me, get the stupid things loose. The lock-down nuts were pretty rounded off from work over the years, but I also didn't know that one side was reverse threaded. I ended up just removing the whole strut and put them in a vise to break things loose. Still I could not get but one of them to break free. I ordered new struts.



Here is the secret.... On the turnbuckle each end is like a nut with a corresponding lock nut to tighten against it. One end has a single line of tick marks going through just the tips of the nut. This is the reverse thread end.I could find no information on this subject anywhere and only learned by ordering the new set. I hope this saves others from rounding off their lock-nuts.

yup - same as a tie rod - this allows you to spin the center link to adjust the distance, without removing either end

One of mine was stripped when I got it...replaced both for ~80$ w/OEM parts

Thanks for the info. I always look at the threads to figure out which way is tighty and which way is loosey. It always slows me down to have to stop and check 5 times which way is which, 'cause I never remember, but looking for the marks might expedite things.

Hmm, I must have an eye for machined parts - I just look at the angle of the threads. My only issue with this assembly is the nuts are made of soft steel, so they do round-off easily.
