Performance Chips
#61

I seldom see higher than 17mpg average (with or without chip), but then that reflects how I drive.

I have the ProMax 7100 chip. I've been pushing my car pretty hard lately and still getting 20-21 mpg. Much fun.

Also my drive home from work is usually in heavy stop and go traffic.

I had both a Promax 7700 & an RS Barn Stage 2 (remaped for 7700RPM). Car drinks more fuel then stock with either chip.

I received the RS Barn chip last week and asked my mechanic to install it while the car was in the shop.

I spoke to him yesterday about doing a few additional things while he still has the car. He's fairly pragmatic about his work, but during the conversation he's telling me, "Oh my God, I put the chip in... you MUST check out the difference. You will FLIP OUT. Holy Cow, etc, etc, etc."

It got my attention because chipping a N/A car has been mediocre, at best, in my experience.

I just purchased the Speed 6 chip and was pleased it is on sale for $100. Everything else is $250.

I'll fill you in after I install it...

I'm thinking about the Speed 6 chip also. Let us know how it performs on the butt dyno.

I believe that everyone here will agree that any of the leading performance chips will enhance your driving experience, many will also agree with me that RS Barn's chip is superior. They also offer a trade in policy if you decide to make further upgrades to your 968 (i.e. header, etc.). The stage 1 chip is , to my knowledge, also the only chip to have been tuned with the Air Box modification, giving it a significant advantage for those users.

RS barn is also a shop that is almost exclusively dedicated to performance upgrades for 944/968s, so it helps our community to support them.

Compare and make your own choice.

I finally got a RS Barn stage 1 chip and I can say it's worth it . The slight surge I had is gone, acceleration is smoother and the butt-o-meter shows a slight power increase (no idea about MPG . Unfortunately with my Tip the red line does not seem to have changed much (if at all); I'm sure the fuel cut off has raised but the trans computer must control the shift points. 1-2 shift is at 6500 and 2-3 shift is at 6800; the road I was on wasn't long enough for a 3-4 shift but I'm sure it will be about the same as the 2-3. Our local PCA is having a tour soon and if I can manage to go Ill have a better idea of the improvement .

Thanks Pete!

the tip has a number of programs (5 i think) - you have to "teach" it - if you go out and drive hard and fast for a bit (somebody else with a tip can tell you how much and such) it will "learn" and adjust its shifting patterns and such - unfortunately it will "relearn" if you go back to sedate driving

Ok I wanna go fast too......................BUT.........how far dare I push that red line without shorting the life of her. I'm a 4k shifter always. What is correct for daily driving? Will the chip hurt her seeing she has 88k on her now?

Thanks

way too many factors involved to determine what higher rpms will do to your particular car

however, that being said, there is nothing whatsoever in any porsche publication about seeking and sustaining levels near the factory redline of 6700 resulting in any damage

many of us have been running chips for a long time now - many of them have much higher redlines - i myself have been running a chip with at least a 7800 rpm redline for the last 25000 miles, and have seen no signs of wear - compression is still almost perfect, oil pressure perfect, everything in tip top shape, and no signs of component wear or damage - this is not to say that you won't have issues - i have no idea what the internal condition of your engine is, or what other factors could be different in your situation than mine

just for reference, when i am putting around, i shift at 4k or so - when i am out playing, i never shift below 7k

I think the dyno would show that there is no real point to revving over 6,700 since the power drops off above that range.

I usually shift around 5,500 for spirited driving....I love WOT with the header...

I just watched F1 qualifying @ Spa this morning. 19000 RPM for 23 seconds and another stretch @ 17 seconds.

Total lap is 69% @ WOT.

Anyhow, back to DD Porsches, the chip will NOT have any adverese effects on engine longevity.

i have dyno tests that show gains above 6700 on many chips - i can definitely feel gains above 6700 on my car even with this one - it is still pulling hard at 7k - this is not as high as it pulled with a previous chip, but the increase in total power and widening of the torque curve of this chip over the other one was enough to make me switch - it may be the 12lb flywheel though that allows the engine to pull harder higher

regardless, shift points are not determined by where power falls off in one gear, but rather where the peak point is in the next gear AFTER the shift - if, for example, the peak is at 6k, then you want to shift at a point that will bring you DOWN to that point AFTER the shift - this generally means shifting well beyond the peak power point

for example, on the chip i am running now, peak torque is at about 4.8k - from first to second, i have to take it to 7500 to see the post shift power point at peak - that needed rev point differential drops as the gears go up though as the gear ratios get closer together

Ross,

Putting a chip in a normally driven car should not hurt the engine at all; especially a stage 1 (your mileage will suffer a bit), what the chip does is tweak the timing and fuel a bit but nothing crazy. As for over revving the engine, that's all up to you and your need for speed.

I drove my car a bit more today and can say for sure that driving normal is improved with the chip.

I just installed the RS Barn Stage 2 chip, did the airbox mod, installed the RS Barn header plus everything else exhaust and had the head gasket replaced (the last two were needed, not an option). A lot of things at once but the result is very impressive. I have not yet been above 5000 rpm but it sure pulls harder and is smoother. No knocking at all - the previous Autothority chip really knocked a lot and I got rid of it and went back to stock once I figured out that it was in the car. I would recommend this setup to anyone.

When I started RS Barn I was focusing on the new performance products for 968's like Headers, exhaust, cams,

I never intended to make a stage 1 chip for basically stock cars.

After dyno testing the chips that were available I did descide there was a reason to offer my own chip.

We found chips from overseas were better than stock but there was more to be had. The chip from the states had the best top end but actually had a torque loss in midrange. My stage one chip provides the best combination of Torque and HP over the whole power range. We look at peak numbers and average power over the whole range. For example one chip had 2 more peak hp than another but the average was down 5hp. Which would you want

I recently installed the RSB stage 1 chip... immediately noticed an improved smoother idle....were previously it was a little rough as compared to my 2000 BMW.

Seat of pants feels like it more inclined to pulling away easier. Very happy with the chip.

I live in australia and I understand that there have been issues with differnces in fuels between the US and AUS (and quality) for other chips. It is generally felt that the US has better quality fuel than we get in Australia. My question is, have you sold any RS Barn Stage 1 chips into Australia. If so, I would love to hear their comments. We have three fuels that are fairly readily available. 92, 96 and 98. In my standard car, I try to put in 98 where possible.

I know that the Promax chip has been used over here.

I am wanting to do the air-box mod and a chip upgrade and my car will remain a toy/daily driver.

I am interested in any comments.

Ciao!

Peter

For what it's worth do the airbox mod, chip or not. It makes the car sound much better and it's a fun way to spend a Sat afternoon. I have the Stage 1 RSB chip and the airbox mod and I'm sure it's more fun to drive now.
