Performance Chips
#81

I'd like to see some dyno curves posted on the various chips out there, rather than taking it as gospel that some particular manufacturer has the latest and greatest and that's just the way it is. I mean, I have no reason to doubt the integerity of the guy at RS Barn; I've never met or talked to him. But my point is we're the marketplace for these products, and we come to this forum to get the benefit of others' experiences, not the sales pitches of the vested interests. Let's not let the tail wag the dog here. Dyno curves anyone?

I have the Speed 6 Racer X chip ( and air box mod, of course ) and although the chip has a 7800 rpm limit, I never let it go beyond 7k in hard runs.. first of all there is no point to it since my power curve also drops like a rock after 6800. Bob must have one of only a handful of heavily modified 968s on the planet with gains beyond 6800...gotta be the light flywheel Secondly, in spite of assurances from everyone to whom I've spoken that you will not cause any damage by even frequent shifting beyond 7000, I'm not taking chances. On normal drives I typically shift around 5k.

Anyway, does the chip make a difference ?! Hell yes ! Even without the airbox mod you can immediately tell that you have greater acceleration and smoother power all around. With the airbox mod added to the chip you may be looking at a combined 20 hp or more diff over stock, so even the lousiest butt-o-meter will feel that.

jlm - there are already plenty of charts out there - they have been out there for years - many of them have been posted here - you're a little late to the game

pete would be happy to discuss his chip over the phone - he is also not afraid of charts - however, he does not wish to discuss them or have them discussed on discussion forums, due to the nature of the beast, and that every single time such a thing happens, it always ends up with somebody trying to defend or justify something that they have that tests have clearly shown does not work as well

a quick search of even just this site will show you what i am talking about - that's why chips have a category all their own

Pick your vendor and go with it.
They all have simalar results although some are marginally better.
It's not like your laying out $400 for a software change.

I've had few different chips myself, and love my RSB chip.

He did bring up the question of available fuel where he is - we have access to 93 octane premium but in other countries, that isn't always the case. I was in Canada last week (Toronto) and the best I could find was 91 octane, which was labeled as "Ultra" or "premium", which - here in the U.S. - would be considered mid-grade for the most part (at least on the east coast around where I am). Would the 2 octane difference make a difference in how a chip performs? I honestly don't know.

checked that too

yes on some chips, like those who achieve their gains primarily by means of timing (like the racer x) - the rs barn uses very little timing in their map, and therefore octane has less of an effect

each chip achieves its gains differently, so you would need to look at the mapping to see

Good thing to know. When I'm putzing around town and using the '68 as a daily driver I fill with 91 and have felt sans difference; runs like a charm. If I go on a club run I throw in '94 so no matter what I do Mr. Ping and Mrs. Knock never haunt me.

When I tested all the other chips available on the market I knew there was a reason to make my own.
I enlisted two people who have modified "Chips" from the earliest E Proms. We did Dyno runs and then encripted chips. Two of the 5 we tested were rip offs from my Tuners. He placed his name in the code. Pretty easy to detect. The others either didn't do too well (overseas) or had excessive timing advance.
We ended up making same peak hp as one with excessive timing and more torque.
I will only disclose my dyno results. I'm proud of what I've developed and tested. I also have lots of very happy customers.
If anyone wants to test and spend their money I will provide a chip for free. I've had a few people set up "Dyno days" and then back out.
Please pick whatever vendor you want and believe their results.
Pete

Jim,
I've posted Dyno tests and results from my stuff. Have you ever seen another vendor post results?
Enough said
Pete
