Just purchased the Speed 6 Performance Chip for my 1993 968 based on the recommendations I read from users on this forum. Are there any reliability issues I may not be aware of. I didn't purchase it primarily for HP and Torque, but to make it more user friendly in general operating conditions. Sometimes its necessary to feather the clutch to get started smoothly, especially uphill, was hoping this might help, as there are no issues with the car. Any comments?

here in San Francico, this is really killing me. I used to be whiz-bang with a manual on hills. Not with this car though. It would keep stalling on me.



It seems to me that off of idle, our cars don't have enough torque to pull the car from a stop - the engine just gives up.



So I have to rev the engine fairly high while feathering the throttle. I actually blew out my clutch last summer cause I freaked out on a really big hill. . . Lombard street or something.

i changed chips to a custom rs barn stage 2 when i installed the header - according to my g-tech, the rs barn chip gave me 5hp more up top than the racer x - smoothed things out a bit better too



i really liked the racer x chip, and i chose it because it outperformed all other chips on the market at that time - it was very easy to tell the difference between it and all the other chips in my car, but i have a few things most people don't, that make the differences stand out



then pete came up with his chips, which did even better, so i switched - i'm a bit nuts like that



if you have a stock flywheel, you will likely not feel enough real difference from one chip to the next, to make it worth changing, but if you have the 12lb aluminum one like i do, it becomes much more evident



i think you'll be happy with the racer x either way

While were on the subject, has anyone had experience with Maxtronic chips? I’ve been talking with different companies as well as reading over old posts here to determine which chip to buy. After calling Wes at Lindsey he referred me to Rus w/ Maxtronic. Like most Porsche techs that I’ve spoken with, I quickly found that Russ is passionate about his work (always a good sign). I clicked around on the forums and found many happy customers boasting smooth powerful acceleration.



Currently his chips are only for 951, 944S2 and 944S. He expects to have the 968max chip released in April.

i didn't realize there was any question anymore - hmmmm



i never heard of them, even in all the searching i did for chip companies in prep for my shootout testing - i'm not saying anything about them, i just never heard of them



it's great that they want to do it, but i can't imagine why anybody else would want to make a 968 chip though - done right, the cost of the testing alone would outweigh any profit they might see at this point - also, i'm not terribly confident that any more can be gotten out of a chip than we already have in the rs barn chip - it's been pretty massaged to death at this point



whatever you do, i recommend you use controlled comparisons from chip to chip in the same car with data and not opinion or somebody's runs showing "x" gains against stock - dynos, cars, conditions, and testing methods differ way to much to get any good comparison that way

Russ can be found on rennlist with a ton of info on his chips. I have not heard anything bad and he apparently worked with few listers on his 9444SMax chip a couple of months ago.

i certainly wasn't slagging him - i don't know anything about him or his stuff, and was merely recommending prudence in selection, regardless of which company - there are already way too many unsubstantiated and false claims of power from too many chip manufacturers

Just found another interesting point about this chip. Rus is offering software to tune the chip after purchasing it. The program (maxtune) allows you to switch between different software images. Street, race, valet, etc. With the ability to further tweak your throttle response you might just find the perfect match.



getting a lil excited as Im still stock. and at the time clutchless!

ah - it's a piggyback unit - the unichip is like that



i noticed it's pretty pricey too



he didn't have S2 charts, which would have been closer, but the 944 charts only showed 4hp and 2 ft/lb increases - i have no idea how their dyno works, but it seems a bit low, even for that car



the flexibility is cool - i like the valet setting too

there's no reason you couldn't do the switch between chips thing with all the other chips out there... there are plenty of switchable eproms available for next to nothing... would just require burning the stock eprom image onto one side of the chip, and whichever aftermarket chip you have burnt to the other side of the chip... eprom burners are not expensive.





What software is used by the various companies that offer aftermarket chips to create their maps? anyone know?

none besides the obvious moral and legal ones inherant with copying the information on the chips



it's also a pain in the butt to change the chip each time for different "modes" - takes about 15 minutes and a good kink in the neck

well, if you own said chip, I don't see the issue of just putting it on to a different eprom... if you're redistributing and such, yah, there's a problem.





The switchable eproms can be switched remotely, so you could put a switch for between modes in your glove box, center of the steering wheel, etc... no need to get down actually to the chip

You'd have to double check to be sure the eprom used on the porsches is a 28 pin(common size for ecus and such), but basically, you're just using one of these

with the 27SF512 eprom chip. Instead of being limited to only one program on the chip, you can put two, and all you have to do is flip a switch wired to the switcher to provide the correct voltage to one of the pins, and there you go... running a different map.





If you want to experiment with this, I have an eprom burner you're welcome to borrow.

Just wanted to follow up, had my racer x chip installed this morning, and after the first two pnging sessions where the variocam kicked in all is fine. No pinging, and faster smoother acceleration.

Day 1 very pleased, thanks to all who recommended and had opinions on this. If it stays reliable I will surely be pleased with the current level of performance.
