I have the option 331 am/fm radio with tape deck. As I look at the two schematics for the speaker systems, I am wondering which of these is what's in my car. (92 cab) The stereo has never worked since I owned this, so I am trying to guess what speaker locations and sizes I have.

cab or hatchback? the rears differ between them



except in a club sport, both cars are the same - the fronts will have a 1" tweeter up top behind the round grill, and a 5.25" mid/woofer behind the grill (though it isn't truly a 5.25") - you may have an additional 4" midrange behind either that same grill, or between the two in the door behind another round grill

Thanks Flash - I was unable to start topics on the first two attempts, so I ended up in this catagory by default.



There are speakers behind the seats as well, no? Are they 6.5"?

I'm changing my head unit and speakers as well - '93 coupe. So 1" tweeter in front door panels, plus 5.25" woofers/ mid in the front doors as well + 6.5" in rear behind the driver. Any recommendations on stereo and speakers? No amp - want to drive speakers with a good receiver and not tear into the car with miles of added wire and holes drilled. Current radio is a Blaupunkt Toronto. Is there a radio available with XM built in that fits our cars?

you know what they say "garbage in - garbage out"

i don't know diddly about the toronto, but start with a clean deck with at least 18watts per channel RMS - also make sure it has at LEAST 3 full bands of Parametric EQ in addition to Bass and Treble control - that or at least 7 bands of Graphic EQ - it would also help to have additional Loudness control or a Bass Emphasis system

the factory speakers actually aren't all that bad, especially the ones in the doors - the spaces they put them in though need help, especially the ones in the rear

then, see the rear speaker enclosure thread for what to do in the rear

line the inside of the doors with dynamat extreme - this will help the speakers produce the best sound they can

as for XM built in, i am not sure that any deck does that - many are XM ready, but require a module to receive it - there are also separate XM units that can tie into any deck (i even have one listed here on the site in the classifieds)

Thanks for the great info. I am looking at a Pioneer 7000BT that has hands-free phone capability and J & L or Infinity Reference components. Hopefully that will help make the long 6 hr drives more enjoyable.

i am a big fan of the pioneer units - lots of "bang for the buck" - good audio sections, decent power, easy to use

i am also a big fan of the JL Audio speakers - i put the 6" stuff in the white car, and was really impressed

the factory tweeters are decent, and can handle the power of the pioneer

a good setup would be:
the pioneer deck you indicate

Infinity 5012i in the front lower with a capacitor on them to cut out the lows - you'll have to do some work on the OEM housing, but they will work - (i think i still have a set lying around here somewhere too)

OEM tweeter

JL Audio 6" woofer in the rear, driven off of the rear speaker outputs of the deck, but set to SubWoofer and not full range - of course, enclose the rear areas as shown in the thread i mentioned

This is terrific info. Thanks so much. IF I decide to add an amp, nothing more then 40-50 W x 4 - is a Kenwood or Alpine an OK install? I read the rear enclosure DIY - makes perfect sense and seems cheap enough and doable. I just cringe every time drilling into the car is involved - I'd make a lousy dentist.

no drilling required for that mod - no worries

i like the sony X-Plode XM-4S, because it is very small, has its own silent fan, and has built in crossover and bass boost - mine is in my glove box - there are a number of good amps though - look for a good THD (1% max at RMS rating)

be aware that if you add any more power than the pioneer provides to the front channels, you WILL blow the factory tweeters - ask me how i know

I have a new Pioneer P9800BT and just installed Infinity Reference Series 6022's and 5020's with the rear speaker enclosure DIY.
I haven't been "on the road" yet but so far it sounds ok in the garage [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif[/img]
The tweeters were dissassembled down to the domes and I drilled out the old stock mounts and set them in so it all looks as it should - they work way better than the stock tweeters.
The crossovers fit perfectly in the stock speaker door mount if you only have the 6-way system, just a little dab of silicon and into the nice blank pocket.

I don't really like the deck as all the controls are menu drive with very few hard assigned buttons. I find I have to take my eye off the road way to much if I want to pick a song or find a new radio station. The sub controls are really bad as you have to navigate through too many options to adjust the sub up or down to compensate for the song engnieering.
But then again I'm a Porsche driver, not supposed to have tunes or cupholders as I'm too wrapped up in the pure driving experience eh! [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif[/img]

once you get used to that deck, you'll love it - i had that one in my car until very recently - i had to spend a small fortune to get the same level of audio quality - the only reason i changed was that i wanted nav in the car - it does require that you use all of the controls though to achieve the "right" sound - if you were here, i'd be happy to tune it for you - once done properly, there is really no reason to have to adjust anything, regardless of input source or volume

oooohh!!!!! pop down for the paso run - i'll do it then - we could spend the day ahead of time really dialing it in

We have friends who live in Long Beach so if I were to go that far then my wife would want to come too and the next thing you know I'm into proper wife things like hotels, restaurant meals and bathrooms. I could get coil-overs instead [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif[/img]

Well the Pioneer (7000BT) is installed - in my wife's car as a guinea pig. The Bluetooth is simply awesome. I have it setup to auto answer at two rings. I still haven't figured out how to adjust the equalization but we'll get there. As you stated, once it has been set, that's it. If I grow accustomed to it, and like it, I will get another for the 968. i don't want to have to spend too much attention adjusting a radio while driving. But this stereo is as advertised and is an impressive unit. There's no way I'll need an amp - this thing has sufficient power behind it to keep me happy. I'll be sure to get efficient speakers if I get another Pioneer like this one. The Infinity References are 2 ohms and post sensitivity #'s around 93-95 so that will be a good match IMO. wish I were closer Flash so you could show me a quick tutorial on how to adjust these things.
