Oil temp gauge sender install

Has anyone installed an aftermarket oil temperature gauge? I have an Autometer oil temp gauge I'd like to use, but I'm am not sure where to install the temperature sensor that came with it. The instructions talk about drilling a hole and welding a bung on the oil pan, but I'm not too excited about that idea. Are there any other options/locations?

That's where I was thinking of putting it. So I emailed Autometer to see if they had the correct size of NPT to metric adapter I'd need to install it there. The largest one they had listed on their website was too small--M16X1.5 and our drain plug is M20X1.5. Here is the email response I got:

"We do not sell such an adapter, and there is really nothing I could recommend more strongly against. There are clearance issues to consider, damage to the vehicle and sending unit, etc. There are good shortcuts and bad shortcuts when working on cars, and this is not a good idea. Your best option is to locate and oil passage elsewhere on the engine or to weld a proper bung into the side of the pan."

I wrote back, explaining the orientation of a 968's drain plug, and the gentleman responded thusly:

"It essentially eliminates that as a drain plug. The brass sending units are not designed to be pulled in and out with that kind of frequency. I'm not sure how the 3 liter cars were set up, but having raced 951's in PCA for years, I always monitored it by putting a port in a the line running to my external oil cooler (obviously before it is cooled). I would check out a company called XRP. They can provide you with -AN line and adapters to install a sender."

That's were I left off. I figured I'd tap into the vast knowledge of those here at 968forums.com.

my sending unit is threaded into the standard drain plug which was drilled and tapped for it - the sending unit itself does not get threaded in and out - i slip the wire off and unthread the drain plug "assembly"

been working great for 5 years now
