Canton Racing spin-on oil filter
#1

The following Rennlist thread says that the anti-drainback valve fails after a period of time, thus allowing all oil to drain out of the filter and resulting in dry starts due to lack of prime. I know that there are several here who have made this mod, myself included, and I just wanted to pass along the info FWIW.

I forgot to mention that I unscrewed the top off of my filter and found no oil inside. I am planning to replace the Canton filter with a Porsche filter for now.

Canton says:

I can only read the last post. As far as the drian back valve goes it is a flat rubber disc the same as any OE oil filter. We have not had any customers call in with any problems with the filters or the drain back valves. Our seal kits come with a new anti drain back valve. If changed every few filter changes there will be no problems.

Tom in Austin,

Thanks for writing to Canton. Replacing the drain back valve every few filter changes defeats the main purpose that I bought the product which was to avoid messy oil fiter changes. There is the benefit of the better filtration provided by the Canton filter but I'm not sure that it is necessary considering how often I change oil.

Wrote back to Canton explaining our concerns further and this was their reply:

Our anti-drain back valve is designed and styled up to or better than the standard of most aftermarket oil filters. The OEM filter for your application has a spring to preload the drain back valve. This is not common with OEM and aftermarket filters for most other applications. If you are worrried about a dry start a engine oil pre-luber like our Accusump would be a good idea.
