Oil Filters
#1

Is anyone using the CM Billet Oil Filter System? If you are, why and is it worth the money? The billet case is running around $83 and the replacement filter around $11.

after hearing from flash, i got one last spring as well.

makes oil changes a breeze.

the stock filter is a mess to change. it's upside-down.

make sure that you tighten it to spec or it will leak. not tricky, but be more careful than i was originally. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/sad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

it does make the oil press gauge act a little differently. flash could probalby explain it.

Thanks,

I remember reading this thread also

The thread that indicated that the Canton filter could cause disasterous results.

Thanks,

I tracked down the thread and found "crappy anti-drainback valve and would allow dry starts after a few hundred miles of use on each new valve. It sits on a shelf in my garage now." Any thoughts? Has anyone experienced the dry start problem?

nope - had it in there for a few thousand now - no issues whatsoever - maybe he got a bunk one - plenty of people using them with no problems

the filtering is twice as good as the best spin on - if you buy the filters in quantity, the price goes down too

I have also had the Canton Mecca oil filter for over a year now and no problems whatever. Changing oil & filter now is a dream compared with the stock "upside down" model. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

When you guys say you've had no problem ... have you ever tried opening it up to see how much oil is still in it? That is, whether the drainback valve is or is not working? Have you noticed anything different as far as how long the oil pressure light is on when you start the engine, or whether the pressure at start up is any different from a conventional filter.

Also, are you driving your car every day? Would you think differently about the drainback issue if you only drive say, once a week?

i've never checked for drain back. never thought to. the car starts great.

never had an oil light come on, either.

i think the press needle just runs a hair higher than before.

From what I understand, the CM oil filters have no bypass valve so that the entire volume of oil is forced through the filter. This is good for filtration, but a severly clogged filter cartridge could starve the motor for oil. This would be a rare situation for sure. It explains the higher pressure readings though because the pump has to work a bit harder to force the oil through the filter.

Standard spin on types have a bypass valve that opens up at 8 to 10 PSI and allows oil to flow freely. Some goes through the filter, some goes around it. In the end, the oil is filtered adequately anyway.

everything has been operating normally, except for a touch higher reading on the needle

i'll be changing my oil again in a couple of weeks - i'll check it again

I've also had one on my car for just over a year now. I've put about 15k miles on it in this time and about to do my third oil change. When I have changed the oil there has been oil in the housing so I think it's working fine. I'll be ordering a gasket set along with some filters for this next change. I would recommend it.

Same experience, I do drive my car every day and change the filter at 5,000 mile intervals (which seem to come up quickly!) Well worth the price in cleaner oil filter changes. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

Yea - brining up and old tread, but I've used up my stash of Mahle filters and I'm thinking about switching to the CM's spin on. Its been a year since the last posts and I wondering if anyones had any problems with the CM set-up (drain back valve) and/or gereneral experince with the Canton...

Thanks Sam

No problems at all Sam, quite the opposite as a matter of fact. My 968 is in the shop for a valve job, sealing up oil leaks, motor mounts, belts & rollers, water pump, etc. While the engine was out of the car I had the mechanic inspect the rod bearings and variocam for wear and he found no wear or discoloration at all. I am very confident that the Canton Mecca filter is doing an excellent job. I still do my own oil & filter changes and the ease of changing the filter element and the no mess results are worth it to me. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

I am also running the Canton filter. No problems. Oil is in the filter body.
