oil sender unit location?
#1

Hi,

I'm having problems with oil pressure gauge, it keeps the pressure readings in 5bar no matter what the situation. I've gotten info that it might be something wrong in the wires that go to oil pressure sender unit, or in the unit itself.

tried to lookup in the factory manuals to find the location of oli pressure sender unit, but didn't get clear picture.

- how to find the oil pressure sender in 968?

- how to check the wires, if they're ok? (need any substances to clean the connectons?)

- is oil pressure unit easy to change, what tools are needed? what is the best way to do the change work?

thanks for your comments!

P.S. Ordered Pete's LWFT-set just yesterday, cannot wait to get it installed, and listen the more aggressive revving of that sweet 3.0 16V.. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

edit. OK, after re-searching the 968 workshop manual found the pic that shows the oil pressure sender is behind the oil filter.. so, question one seems to be cleared.

The oil pressure sender unit looks like this

The left side is screwed into the oil filter housing, just below and rearward from the filter. You probably can't see it from above due to the heat shield in the way, but you can see it from below. You need to look at the two wires connected to the two posts in the pic. If the wires are frayed, broken, cut, detached, etc. then there is a problem! One time I had the 5-bar problem and I found out one of the posts on the sender just snapped off...

To replace it, it's pretty tricky. I've only done it while the head, header pipes, and heat shield were all out of the way. You will need to do it from below that's for sure. I think the wrench size you need is 24mm. Get a SHORT wrench. Maybe a crow-foot wrench as well. All you need to do is unplug the two wires, then unscrew the sender.

If you are DEFINITELY removing the sender, you can grab on it with any kind of force and brutality you want. But putting the new one in, you must only turn it by the hex section at the base. And don't over torque it. Use a crow-foot & a torque wrench if you are uncomfortable with "feeling torque" by hand.

Cheers
