Dino Oil after Syn - and Green Stuff
#1

Poking around under the hood today. I noticed that the previous owner's service crew used Mobil-1 15-50 and Jack changed the oil with dino 20-50. I've heard that you are not supposed to go back to dino once you use syn. Any problems here?

Also checked the antifreeze. Looks like green stuff in there. To be honest it looks green where it's deep, but where there is less than an inch or so it looks blue. Nervous about the phosphate thing.

Suggestions welcome...

i'd roll the dice and change out the fluids to the correct stuff - given the choice between a maybe of a leak and a definite shorter lifespan engine, i'll take my chances on the leak

You might want to post your oil question (or search) here:

http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/; there is a passenger car oil forum here: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbth...rd=1&page=1.

If I was unsure about whether my car had the correct coolant, I would change it.

I've switched back and forth before with no ill effects on other vehicles. They do make green phosphate free antifreeze, I have it one of mine.

I had a buddy of mine have a hydrolocked engine after using dino. He did not know that the PO used M1 and he only used the dino stuff. It was a Honda Accord but I'm sure the same would apply to our cars.

As long as you switch to syn. and stay there you should be fine.

How will the dino cause hydro-lock?

Joe,

I am certainly not an expert on either subject, but I think going back to synthetic on your next oil change would be fine. Draining and refilling the dino oil earlier seems unnecessary.

I don't want to be in a position of defending Jack, since I referred you to him, but he's been in the Porsche business for most of his adult life, and I really doubt that he would make a mistake on the wrong coolant. I would suggest calling him to discuss.

You change the oil and then drive through a puddle with your CAI sucking the water into the engine.

I personally change oil back and forth from dino to synthetic as the funds fit. Been doing it for years in my 72 911 and my Harley with no ill effects whatsoever. The previous owner ran dino oil in the 968.

No puddles in SoCal. Only sunshine, clean air (not) and beautiful girls in bikinis.
