"Tweaked" oil cooler
#1

While replacing the lower front plastic grill I had to drop the oil cooler to reach some screws.

The housing is twisted and slightly crushed on the bottom, but it's not leaking.

Should I count my lucky stars and replace it, or don't worry be happy and get on down the road?

i would count my lucky stars and replace it.  if it leaks, it could pump out all of your oil in seconds.  i got lucky  that i happened to be paying attention to the oil pressure gauge when i cut a main pressure line, but in the time it took me freak out and to pull over and stop, i lost almost all of my oil.  huge mess too.

I vaguely recall reading somewhere that just the residual oil left in the engine even after you lose "all" the oil which pumps out, is still sufficient to let your engine run for at least 10 to 15 minutes before it dries out to the point where damage occurs . No friggin' way would I rely on that and risk driving it for a second longer than I have to until pulling over and turning off the engine, but could that true , or did I read ( or remember ) that incorrectly, and is it maybe ok for other types of engines like diesel , or rotary , etc. but definitely not ours ?

Okay I have a stupid question

I thought this oil cooler was for the transmission oil, but the oil pressure gauge reports engine oil pressure?

Is there a pressure gauge for this transmission oil,or did you install another pressure gauge?

A manual has a one oil cooler on the passenger side (the one you need to replace). Tips have an additional ATF cooler on the drivers side to cool the transmission. There is no gauge for the latter. Maybe a warning light?

Manuals have that blank piece in the grille because there is no ATF cooler.

ds - not likely it would run for more than a minute or so.  when i blew the line, i lost over 6 quarts.  it ran for less than a minute.  there was no sign of damage.  can't imagine it running for long though.

mlb - that cooler is for engine oil.

When I had my accident (ran through a 2 ft ditch), damaged the oil cooler. I didn't go for than 2-3 minutes to get off the road. All the oil was gone and the engine siezed. Amen!
