A/C and heat won't work?

Hello I have a '92 coupe and the heat and a/c won't work at all. The fan runs fine and the vents but I only get air from outside it seems. Are these 2 things connected any where? Like a relay or fuse? I know I have been told to check freon but that won't fix the heat not working. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks

Clark's Garage has a write-up on the vacuum solenoids in the passenger footwell that run the flappers and heater control valve based on vacuum (albeit for a 944, but it's markedly the same).



You can also check the A/C relay, from memory I think it's a 53-type and there are several others in the fusebox you can swap out as a test.



Out of curiosity, when you depress the recirc button, does the amber LED on it light up steadily? Is there any clicking sound emanating from the passenger footwell?

I'm not getting any heat nor AC either in my car. I had previously assumed that it was because the vacuum lines weren't hooked up, but the problem is still there even after I hooked up the lines (hopefully correctly). The water lines in the passenger's footwell are hot. Not sure about the AC yet.



However, I think I've diagnosed mine as a missing temperature sensor tube and possibly missing temperature sensor.

Sorry to hear about your problem(s). I feel your pain. So many of us have issues with this system, and I always laugh when I see a 968 for sale and the add says, "A/C blows COLD". Yah, right!



My a/c compressor is shot and now the vents just blow hot air, all of the time. I wonder if my climate control unit is bad....



But to your problem, seems like it could be a number of things. Any luck yet diagnosing the problems from suggestions, above?

Vents blowing hot air all the time is quite a common fault. If you search here you will find either the little white clip on the control rod is broken or the <acronym title='heater control valve'>HCV</acronym> is bad and need replacing.

had to put in a new starter this weekend and the radiator fan switch but next on the list is the A/C and heater. hopefully I will locate the problem easily once I get started on it. Will post findings.

tamathumper, I will try this tomorrow I haven't touched the recir button at all yet. , I worked on starter and radiator switch this weekend. Would any one know where to locate the drain hose for the A/C? I looked it up in manual and it shows the part but separate from the car. Can I see it if I look under the dash by the radio?

Hot968 (or anyone else), if you're under the dash by the glove box, could you try to get a picture of the interior temperature sensor tube and the actual sensor itself?



I'm sure I'm missing the tube, but I have no idea if I'm missing the sensor. The PET isn't very explicit as to what it looks like and I haven't been able to find a picture online anywhere.

mbardeen I will try and take pictures tomorrow and post them I do have trouble posting picutres on thei forum though but I will try. I have a '92 coupe from what I am reading it is different for a "93 or newer. I don't know what u have?

If I recall correctly, the AC drain hose is behind the radio, and exits the bottom of the car at the top of the "torque tube tunnel" if that's the right word for it, and I had a very clear view of it while I was installing my double-DIN stereo. It's not readily accessible from beneath the car because the torque tube and exhaust are probably in the way.



I'd try looking from the passenger side, then try pulling out the cubby under the radio, but more likely I'd take off the center console and/or remove my radio to get full access. The center console removes very easily with only a few screws, some clips around the shifter boot, and some plugs (be gentle on them) under the switches. Pull the ashtray to get to the first screws, then open the cassette tray door to find a couple more, then remove the screws on each side at the front of the console and proceed from there.

mbardeen, I tried my best to see the drain hose or any thing else that I recognized un the dash by the passenger footwell looking up. Nothing looked like the pictures I have seen very dissappointing. I did find the sensor and the tube looking at it from the front of the dash I will send u photos tomorrow but I don't know if it will help u to much. I am bumped out because I am trying to fine the drain hose and every thing under the dash is covered in hard plastic, I couldn't find any thing like a hose. I will try again tomorrow.

mbardeen, I took these pictures of the sensors today. The hole by the lighter is were the sensor is there is a small grate type piece that goes over the hole but I broke it looking to see if I had the tube behind the sensor. On a positive note I took the car for a 60 mile ride today and the heater WORKED!! Man it gave out plenty of heat so now it is just the A/C I have to figure out. Oh, I see it! Oh wait, no I don't,... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.png" class="smilie" alt="" />



I believe the sensor is actually under the dash near the firewall, and there's a black hose that runs from the grate back to the firewall to supply air to it. You can see it most clearly when you remove the glovebox, and the little grate comes out when you loosen the screw that's visible when looking into the grate, near the bottom of the fitting. But, you really shouldn't have to remove the grate.

I accidentally pulled the temp sensor hose off the sensor. Can anyone describe where it should connect? I hunted around but could not find. Thanks!

Get a flashlight and look way up under the dash, you should see the nipple for it high up on the firewall.

No doubt it's then stretched out when connected on both ends. Man this silly little trim piece on the dash is such a PITA to install....
