Oil Leak Stopped
#1

Hi,

I don't post often, but something happened recently about which I have no clue.

For years, my 1994 Cab had an oil leak that earned it the nickname of "Sir Leaks-a-Lot". The dealership quoted more than $5000 to re-seal the engine and provide a new oil pan gasket. (Car had always been serviced at the dealership up until it moved to the mainland.)

A year ago, I moved the car from Hawaii to Nevada and found a local guy who's restoring a 951 and who also happens to work at a service station just down the street. I took the car to him for an oil change in August and he tightened the oil pressure sending unit (at no charge). Since then, no leaks--not even so much as a drop. To my knowledge, he did nothing else out of the ordinary.

Oil level is fine, garage floor is clean.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't be surprised if a loose sending unit could cause a sizable leak, and tightening it could fix the leak. I replaced the oil filter housing gasket which is also the gasket that the sending unit goes through, and due to the oil pressure at the gasket, it was leaking quite heavily before I did the job. I wish my problem had been as easy as tightening the sending unit!

That sounds waaaay to easy. Are'nt these cars suppose to be high maintanece and expensive to repair. Surely it's not a 968.

Hi Phil,

How hard was to replace the gasket on the oil filter housing? It looks like my car leaks oil at the gasket too.

I cannot pinpoint where the leak comes from, but ends up as shown on the picture in red. I cannot find any detailed diagram of that part where the oil accumulates then drips. Does it look familiar to you? Any ideas where the leak might occur? Any info is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Peter
