Oil in the Airbox
#1

Doing a little engine bay clean up and found a little oil in the airbox and a few drips on the bottom of the MAF connection.

<!--sizeo:4--><!--/sizeo-->Inside the MAF chamber it looks dry.<!--sizec--><!--/sizec-->

<!--sizeo:4--><!--/sizeo-->Any reason to worry? Car is running fine.<!--sizec--><!--/sizec-->

How / from where could oil get into the air box ?
I hope the CRC or whatever other MAF cleaner spray you use will take care of anything that might have gotten on the sensor wires, but if the car is running fine it probably did not blow in far enough to get to those ..

Seemed odd to me as well. If oil is coming against the flow of air from the engine then I figure I got some problems.

Oil on the K&N filter, as from the factory - I have not reconditioned it yet.

The oil looked pretty light weight - maybe 15W or 20W. And it was very clean. Maybe 5 to 10 ml total.

Don't know how our P cars are plumbed but it could be blow by from overfilling the crankcase with oil. Check you oil level and see if it's above the top mark.

I would bet it has to do with the air/oil separator under the manifold. You know there is a check valve in the line going from the throttle body to the AOS. Check it out!!

also check to make sure the vacuum line on the air/oil separator is connected

air/oil separator

Item 26 below?

And 34 is the vacuum line? Goes to the downstream side of the MAF?

34 appears to be attached at both ends. Oil was just changed and it is very, very full but does not appear grossly overfilled. Does smell a bit when I rev it out, which is not normal for this car.

Until very recently, I'd never even heard of an air/oil separator. Could somebody please give a brief description of what it does, how it works, what are the primary symptoms of its failure, and whether it should be on our list of things that needs to be replaced when our cars hit a certain age. Like, for example, should it just be replaced as a matter of course when pulling the head to refurbish it? Can it be cleaned or serviced/reparied, or does it need to be replaced? Thanks.

the vacuum line is not on that diagram - it connects at the top though

no service required that i know of - replacement is fairly pricey - normally functions fine as long as the vacuum line is connected - it will suck out out though and send it straight to the intake when it isn't

Vacuum line goes to the throttle body downstream of MAF?

no - it's a short one that goes from the top of the air/oil separator to the intake manifold, right next to where the brake booster is connected
