Oil Consumption
#1

I had a rebuilt head installed on my 160,000 mile engine. Since then, oil consumption has increased markedly. Before the work was done, my oil usage was in the range of 1q every 4-5k miles or so. Since the head was changed, I'm using closer to 1q every 1-2k miles. There is no oil leakage, engine performance is no different than it was with the old head (no smoking, fuel mileage is the same, etc.) - the only noticeable change is that oil consumption is up.

Any ideas?

1 qt every 1-2k is not outside of the Porsche described parameters for oil consumption. The key word being "consumption." I used a little less than a quart in a 1k trip to PA and back. Extended highway/high speed driving increases consumption in this engine. The same was true in my old S2.

So, I'm not convinced that you have a problem. But I understand why you would be concerned. I would closely monitor both the floor and the coolant reservoir just to be on the safe side.

When I got my car it was down 1/2 quart. I was told when I had the belts done it looked beauful so no worries. Imagine my surprise when it got down a full quart to min. and all the lights came on. Not sure of its real consunption rate yet. No drops or smoke at 87000 miles. I have been made aware of the dumping into the coolant thing though. So I'm keeping a close watch seeing I have only put 800 miles on her since I got her.

Check for oil residue in the coolant reservoir, also can check for the sweet coolant smell in the oil. It usually shows up more in the coolant reservoir. Being a 92 I'm sure some seals are drying up in there especially if it sat for extended times.
