Oil burning? what is normal?
#1

My 968 has 85,322 miles on it. I use ELF synthetic Oil in it, change it every two years. Bought this car from Pete of RS barn. I find that over the 2 years or about 6,000 miles it burns up about 1.6 liters of Oil. Is this normal?

If you look at the manual (at least my S2 one) Porsche states that 1 litre per 1500 km is acceptable/normal use. The 911 manual says something similar. You are just fine with that usage.

I burn a quart about every 800-1,000..the less I drive the more it burns. I don't track my car, but always drive in a "spirited" manner....

i was using a litre every 1500 km. Following the head work and new rings in Oct 2010 this has dropped to about a litre every 8000 km.

What Flash said. I just used 3/4 liter on a near 2000 mile road trip. Full on, high revving almost the entire time though

*knocks on wood

154,000 miles with no major engine work yet, just water pump, belts, etc. It hasn't burned a single drop of oil in the five years I've owned this car. It still sees at or near redline regularly, just luck of the draw I guess. I change it every 5000 miles or so, btw, with synthetic.

You mean that after 5000 miles, the oil is at the same level on the dipstick as when you last filled it up after your last oil change? That's really impressive. I actually had that experience once, but I hadn't put any track miles on that particular change interval. So, it is possible for these engines to run really tight, although it doesn't seem to be the norm.

I think I'd be more comfortable with just a little bit of loss, know what I mean? Kind of like wanting my oil to get a little dirty so I know it's working.

The oil gets plenty dirty, it just doesn't go anywhere. I don't ever top up between changes, the oil level on the dipstick is always in the middle of the range, no matter how much driving I've done. I thought that Porsche was trying to cover their butts a bit with the one liter per 1500km thing in the manual.

The engine does have 154,000 miles on it tho, can the rings really still be that good? I did a leakdown test on all four cylinders and they were all in the 92%-96% range. I like to think it's because I'm very mechanically sympathetic, and a fantastic driver of coarse.

Almost nothing for highway cruising. 1 litre during a track day.
