new tire on the market ?

Ok, in 255 40 17 the section width is ( new ) 10.236" , and max in service ( whatever that means ) is 10.63"

Does anyone know how this compares to the Michelin PS2 in that size ?

Also, how about Bridgestone SO3s ?

Actually, Porsche's spec for the 968 is 36 cold. I have always found this a bit hard on the human chassis and so I try to keep them at 33/34 all around for daily use. I always go to 36 if I think the driving will be spirited - PCA runs, etc.

I have never had tire wear problems at this inflation - and it is the same as my old S2 - so I have been running it daily for nearly 10 years.

20k miles out of a set of max performance summer tires is about the best you can hope for... lots of other Porsche owners (the 996 C4S for example) are lucky to get 12k out of the rears. But, all of this is why high quality, lower priced tires like this Vredestein or the Sumitomo HTRZ III are so valuable!

they don't make the S0-3 anymore, so can't find that spec

PS2 is 10.2 section
Yoko Advan is 10.3
Bridgestone RE070 is 9.8
Bridegstone RE050 is 10.1

It looks like the differences are completely insignificant in that case, unless I'm reading this wrong..
The tire rack has one spec listed for section width and a different one for tread width .. for all the tires, except
on Michelins where the tread width info is " N/A " What is tread width as opposed to section width ?

section width is the width across the sidewalls - tread with is the actual contact patch area - tread width is what i would concern myself with

think of it like this: square corner or rounded one? a squarer corner tends to have more tread width than a rounded one

the tradeoff is usually compliance - a squarer corner usually makes for a bit more rigid of a ride

i guess tread width then is where the biggest difference b/w the PS2 and the SO3s might have been .
i'll try to see if I can find out what the tread width is on the Ultrac

I ordered them today. Shipping out tomorrow, the whse is in Philly so they'll probably arrive before the end of next week. Perfect chance to road test them in a couple of weeks when I expect to drive to L.A. .. a 1,000 miles test, so I'll report back with general impressions. Since they're new I won't compare them with my current PS2s though, because I can't possibly remember how these were when they were new..

you know, there's always something that has to take the joy out of a new purchase.. of course, it's entirely my fault for not checking all the little details BEFORE I buy the damn thing, but learn by mistakes I suppose..

the 235 45 17 weigh 24 lbs and the 255 40 17 weigh 27 lbs ! great, ' cause I really needed to add a couple of extra lbs to each wheel ( vs the same size PS2, or Bridgestones, or Pirellis, or Yokos ..) directly to the rotating mass ...as if the spacers with the steel bolts I have on now were not enough of a drag.. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dry.gif[/img]

dammit, the sacrifices I make for aesthetics [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif[/img]

even though these are not Porsche dudes, though very respectful cars in their own right ( G35 and 350Z ), this set of performance reviews is certainly encouraging :

furthermore if this first driver says the 19" were 23 lbs, then the UPS weight reading on the shipping details I got must be total b.s.. they don't pack tires in anything other than plastic, so not sure where they came up with that weight for mine - in 17", those things must be under 20 lbs - whoo-hoo !!

the worn out ones? the difference between a fresh tire and a worn one is 2-3lbs, which seems to be about right based on the info at tire rack

I have ~10k on my Sumitomo HTRZIIIs. So far so good. Just now starting to get a little noisy, but just barely. Treadwear is good and performance has been as expected. Not PS2s - but close enough at this price.

I've been in the Tire business all my life. All rubber companies value the opinion of the Tire Rack and their evaluations of product performance. So much so that I know of one Rubber Co. that took a tire back after giving it to "The Rack" to evaluate and made further modifications based on the Tire Rack's own test drivers review. Tire Rack does evaluate the Sumitomo ZRIII as being ALMOST equal to Bridgestone and Michelins UHP tires. For the money, its the tire to run.
One other thing about this tire design that kind of bothers me is that I don't see how the water escapes under the tire. It appears that the grooves are dammed up at each end. Pretty neat looking tire though.

As I said, no way to compare them with my PS2s on which I logged 20k miles, but after these have had their share of driving, whether at 1k, or 5k miles, or 10k.. I'll post some impressions. On the 10 minute drive home from the tire shop - 50% street, 50% highway, the opinion is : yes, they're definitely.....new tires [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif[/img] .

Frankly, I couldn't even say there is a night and day difference vs. the old PS2s during that brief trek of "normal driving" ... did not feel either softer, nor stiffer, quieter, nor noisier, bouncier or any less bouncy, but you could
tell it rides a little differently, nonetheles.. car stops much quicker when braking though..


I called the shop and told them they may need to balance the front wheels again, because there is a slight vibration
I detected between 150 - 150 mph.. there was a very long, silent pause which followed.. I did let them off the hook, because these guys know me fairly well, so I'm sure they thought I was serious [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif[/img]
