ok - first off, that just gets confusing - you have the late ECU, and reference to "01" is a misnomer - a more correct reference, if you want to abbreviate it, is "070" as opposed to "474"



you should have no problem finding a chip fairly near you - give pete a buzz - he probably has a list of people who have one sitting on a shelf now

Flash - I have the MIDDLE ECU not the last one. There were three of them with the last one starting in use in Dec 1991. The last two digits were .00, .01 and .02. The one I have (.01) was used from Sept-Nov 91. May car was built in Nov 91. I need a chip that works with the .01 ECU.

ok - let's see if i can clear this up a bit



there are only 2 ECUs - there are 2 chips - that makes up the 3 combinations they used



early ecu is 0261.200.474

late ecu is 0261.203.070

early chip is 356-782

late chip is 357-459



the combinations are:



early ecu/early chip

late ecu/early chip

late ecu/late chip



early ecu only works with early chip

late ecu works with both



no idea exactly why - just know that's he way it is

Flash - don't want to belabour the point but Porsche Canada said there were three ECUs used (I don't know ANYTHING about the chips as mine was an Autothority version). They were labelled with Porsche numbers ending in .00, .01 and .02. The starting dates of use were July 91, Sept 91 and Dec 91. I got a printout on this directly from Porsche. I just want to be clear in that I don't want a chip that works only with the post Dec 91 ECU. I realise that you know a lot more than I do but I am getting conflicting info from the manufacturer on this.

there were 3 combinations - not 3 ecus - what they gave you is partial information



the assembly numbers had the .00, .01 numbers, etc, but the assembly consisted of the ecu and the chip



what you had, if you had .01, was the middle assembly, consisting of the late ecu and early chip - it will work with both OEM chips, and pretty much any of the aftermarket chips



the ecu number you are looking for is the number i listed above NOT the 944 number - the 944 part numbers are the assembly numbers, so yes, there were 3 of those

p.s. - if you really want to restore it to original condition, you are probably going to have a hard time - the chip you would have had (358-782), is pretty rare - i think there were only about 20 cars with it



the late one will work fine though (357-459)

Flash - as we discussed on the phone - I don't want to restore to original, just try a chip that ought to work to see if the knocking is due to the aftermarket chip or something else. Thanks for the phone call as it cleared up some confusion at my end. Jay, I would love to try the OEM chip if the offer is still open.



PS - as an aside, the local Porsche dealer had an open house tonight to mark the grand opening. There were two 928s there and a C4S that I caravaned with coming home. What a HOOT! Little sideways here and there - I could keep up with the 928 S4 but decided to back off at 160 before we all eitehr got arrested or killed.

also my experience - we can keep up with 928's till about 80-90mph or so and then it's goodbye Mr. Bond . . . 928's really shine at 100+

I don't know what DME number I have, never bothered to look. Yes it is an american car with a build date of 10/91. You are talking about the last numbers listed on the original chip correct? It does run great with a Promax chip in it, never had any issues. If you want to look into it some more I'll post the

dme number for you.

well, of course i want to have all information i can gather - if there is something else out there, that isn't listed anywhere, and nobody so far knows about, i'd like to look on to it



i got the same information from all three sources, who should know, so i tend to believe them, but this may be another setup



sometimes i feel a bit like an archeologist when it comes to this stuff - there are so few cars out there with anything but the late dme and late chip, it's really hard to figure out what they did - two years into this, and only now are we actually finding a couple of cars that had something else



if you have dme number 0261.203.070, then yes, the promax will work fine - if you have dme number 0261.200.474, then i have no idea - nobody has tested that one, including promax (at least not that we've been made aware)
