where did the shift boot come from?

It was from Rennbay. I rushed to take the picture after putting stereo bezels and new boot in place. After driving, the bottom of the boot has settled into a more natural position. The old one was really torn up badly.



Don't know about other options out there, but I am really happy with fit and finish of the product.

looks good - did it come complete? some of the kits make you fit the top cup in - i am looking for more of a plug and play

Nope. It was just the leather sheath. I had to fit it on my nob and re-insert the top. Also had to reuse the ring which snaps to the center console. I really like the weight and feel of the stock knob and wasn't sure if it would have the same feel on a completely new knob/boot combo.

I also had my AVIC D3 installed on Thurs, and am very happy with it. I had installed the following items,



-AVIC D3

-Pioneer BTB200 Bluetooth adapter with mic.

-Pioneer Ipod Cable

-Boyo VTL420 Backup camera



I will post some pics. Everything works great, and the shop that installled everything did the bypass as well, so I can program new destinations on the Nav while in motion (co pilot of course!) as well as the the DVD/Video will work in motion as well.

Just found info that the cd for NAV can be removed while going to the location to put in a music cd.

I must admit that the AVIC D-3 has given me gear lust, also the iPhone and the Ipod touch.

yes, but you can't make changes to the route, and i'm not sure the other features like POI can be used - that's the whole reason i didn't get it



i would love to have saved the money, but after living with the D1, i knew that on the fly adjustments, changes and searches were a MUST, and i did not want to lose the CD during that process, or have to be fiddling with disks - i also knew that i would never be monkeying around with an i-pod, and so i needed the slot for music



wish i had room in the 968 for a flip door unit

If you don't want to use an Ipod, it can also accomodate a cd changer, so from what I understand you could keep the Navi disc in the main drive and run the music though the cd changer. Also XM/Sirius is an option as well, which would also allow the Navi disc to be kept in the changer and still have music.



Myself I am using a 30G Ipod video.

yeah - complicated and expensive ways to go there - the net was nearly the same, but with more weight, more gadgets, and more wires



besides, i don't want any subscription services, and definitely do not want the poor sound quality of the ipod - cd is bad enough - the ipod sounds as bad as or worse than FM



i would have gladly sacrificed screen size to have the second slot



i'll just likely put the software on my treo and call it a day for the 968, but i might measure again to see if the Z2 fits

The Z2 will probably fit but you would probably have to put the car in reverse, 4th or 6th gear when you have to open the slot

As it turns out, there indeed was a harness in my car. It was a metra harness. Do a search online for metra harness. I do not have a part number, but I do know they made one, as there is one in my car.



However, I do not have the upgraded system with the amps under the seats, etc. I imagine that setup would complicate matters.

You can probably get it at your local circuit city, best buy, Fry's or RC Willey. Dont ask the sales rep cuz they probably wont know. Ask one of their installer instead.

by the way - update on the bypass kits



i went to the link for the kits on ebay - ordered the kits - then i had some simple questions about them - the guy was a pain in the butt to deal with - very evasive and difficult - it took over a half dozen very specifically worded emails to get him to finally answer my questions



my guess is that because he is doing something technically illegal, he is trying to stay under the radar



also, these kits VOID the pioneer warranty - the one for the Z2 has a CD that alters the software, and if the unit died, and i had to send it in, they would find the changes, and void the warranty - i have to wait until june to do that one

Thanks. I joined AVIC411.com and found this post about a 2001 911 install.

"your car should not be optical since its an 01. You need a metra 70-1784 "vw harness" just remember that the constant and ign will be backwards on the harness so just hook your red to yellow and vice versa. 40-vw10 is the ant adapter you need and speed sense should be the top pin on the same side as your ground. next you will have a small square plug with 6 wires in it. the 2 center pins are amp turn on and signal ground and the 4 surrounding wires are your hot signals. cut this plug off and solder rca's sharing same ground and hook amp turn on to you guessed it, amp turn on. "



I'll search for the METRA harness and post the results.



If you could post the wire connection diagram from the D3 to the 968 I would appreciate it. I have no idea where in the harness I can find reverse light voltage, speed sense wire etc. The speakers, antenna are no problem, it's just the "GPS" wires that puzzle me.

Where is the best place to mount the GPS antenna on a cab??

You can do a search here for the wiring diagram for the 968. I think the key word was "radio wire" . I did the bypass mod which allows me to use the nav and video functions while on the go. So this is what I did:



I relocated the mute wire to the upper right position (http://www.avic411.com/D3Bypass/album0.html for pix)

Ground the mute wire (yellow black) and the parking brake wire (light green).

Connect the reverse wire by tapping to the rear parking lights.

I did not connect speed pulse sensor wire as it is not needed.

I mounted the gps antenna on the dash (center in front of the vents).
