he's at it again - new nav
#1

well, i've gotten depenent upon the nav systems now - first it was the D1 in the denali - then it was the upgraded Z2 that replaced it, and was also installed in the M3 - the 968 was lacking a system, and none of the systems i wanted would fit - i insisted on being able to play a CD at the same time i was running active nav - the D3 didn't do that, and neither did any other units, without it having to flip outward, which hit the shifter

i also did not want to give up the audio quality of the pioneer premiere 980BT

i tried a garmin unit - cute, but could not hear it over the car and road noise - also no clean way to install it into the car's system - i wasn't fond of it in the windshield either

it took a while, and it wasn't cheap, but i think i nailed it

i found a now discontinued unit - the JVC KD-NXD505 - it is a single DIN unit with a 3.5" screen that has a 40gig hard drive, built in nav, yada yada, and with the additional blue tooth and ipod modules, will do everything i wanted - but, the audio controls were less than what i wanted, and certainly less than what i had

so.........back to shopping - i found the holy grail of equalizers - it's the rockford fosgate 3sixty2 - 31 bands of eq at each front channel, 27 at each rear, and 10 for the sub (i could do a center too) - built in crossovers, filters, time alignment, yada yada

that should satisfy even me

now i am looking to install the homelink mirror so i can finally get rid of the remotes in the car - then hardwire in the radar detector

Looks like a nice set up. I am hopeless without the nav now as well. If I remember I'll stare at the google map for a couple of minutes before heading out. That seems to at least keep me pointed in the right compass direction, but a lot of u-turns, which , as it turns out, is OK because its pretty fun to swing the tail of that 968 out whilst stomping the right pedal

Can you fit those modules behind the dash? As I recall it was pretty tight up in there...

Now you know why he is always trying to lighten the beast, has to make room for toys

lol - yes, they fit - don't ask me how i made that happen - i could tell you, but then i'd have to kill you - the good news is that the mod to make that happen took out more weight than the new toys (so you didn't know how close you really were to the truth)

well, the project has begun - i ripped out the deck, wiring, and removed the glove box - now fitting the new units and working out the harness - this one is going to take a while to make it really clean - i am nutty about wiring, and hate having to dive in to fix stuff, so i'll be doing everything soldered and shrink tubed - i'll post pics as i go

still trying to decide on the radar stuff though

I have been debating about the Escort Passport built in detector. I rarely end up on highways where I need it and I have yet to EVER see a cop on the backroads I travel. I may have just doomed myself with that last statement....

lol - this is a tough one - with all the RDD units out there, i am very aware of how important this can be on cross-country trips - it really slows you down when you have to worry about speeding tickets that much - in normal driving that isn't so much of a big deal - but when you are a very large target like in the denali dragging a trailer, a few mph means a lot in time, or a big ticket

also, the new POP radar is an issue

i like the idea of built in, but the cost is silly at $1100 for the STi-r which does everything but laser shifting (which is not proven to be all that effective anyway) - beltronics makes a hardwire kit for their other units, that would at least eliminate the cigarette lighter adaptor - i could then run the STi Driver and be in for under $500, though it would mean that there is a unit visible on the dash - these are the only ones that are RDD proof at this time - some of the others are immune to some of the detector detectors, but not all of them

the escort unit, which is essentially the same as the STi-r, and includes laser shifting, is $1600 - i can find no real advantage though, given the lack of the RDD completeness

the older RX75 doesn't cover the RDD issues either, and at $1100, is not the best choice, though it does include shifting

the other thing to consider is GPS - this allows for red-light cameras and known photo traps to alert you before you get to them

decisions decisions - we have PLENTY of radar here though, an lasers popping up all over, so this is a MUST DO - more research required, but decision soon

probably fine everywhere they don't use the new VG-4, Spectre II and Spectre III RDDs - the problem is that i have no idea where they use those yet

Looks like you reached the JVC unit for the same reasons as mine, although I don't have the killer equalizer, of course.
I have bluetooth and iPod modules, too, but yet to be installed...

I agree with you on clean install, everything integral.

yup - while i am looking forward to the end result, the work will be pretty involved - it's a lot of units, with mountings for all, and a bunch of cables to build - i think it will end up being the ultimate setup though, with all the modern features, nav, bluetooth, ipod, cd, mp3, radar detector, integrated autodimming homelink garage door opener/mirror/compass, yada yada

lol - on top of all the work though, now i have to list a bluetooth module on amazon - they sent me two by mistake, and now the vendor wants me to pay a restocking fee and return shipping - in the end i think i would get about 10 bucks

On my current installation, I made a hole in the glove box so that I could run the cables for the bluetooth module into the glove box, and then I mounted the module on the inside top surface of the glove box with cable ties. Being on the top of the box interior, it took away no usable space, and is still accessible if need be.

lol - yeah - i made a hole there too, for the 4 channel amplifier that drives the cabin speakers - pretty much takes up all the glove box

i think i have worked out where the other modules are going to live - should actually be pretty cool

I put my ipod in the glove box thru a small hole. Found that the bluetooth module fits really well on the passenger side of the center console, take notching out a bit of the insulation foam. The carpet flaps back over and you'd never know it was there.

hmmm - the modules are going to live in the dash, but the ipod will likely live in the console

got the powers and grounds in today - re-routed the sub rca cables, since they now need to go to the 362 first - ran switched power up to the mirror - ran the gps antenna - tidied up the OEM wiring

tapped the speed sensor wire too - yes i took pics - will post as soon as i know it worked

will run the 362 controller cable tomorrow, and install the controller and the ipod

might actually get the rest of the system in - it's pretty easy from there

i'll put up pics of the progress tomorrow
