Sam,

Thanks.

No. The pick up wire is on pin # 9 on the DME computer main plug. If you search the site for the DIY on the remote entry modification you will get all the info that you need on how to get there.

I opened up the DME area and looked at the huge mulitpin connector and realized that it was way to big a job to cut into the cable. It also made me think twice about cutting into so critical an area.

I decided to run without and it works fine. I want to get it as good as it can get, so the plan is to tap into the wheel sensor directly.

I'll post the results.

The unit has been working just fine without the DME hookup. Did not go to the wheel sensor either. Let me know if you decided to add this line and how it went.

The unit is a HUGE improvement in the way the car looks inside and is very helpful when exploring the hills and back roads on a weekend drive. The sound and entertainment upgrade is also very cool.

So without the DME and wheel sensor, the GPS is picking up your location/speed based on its own triangulation and nothing more, right? Essentially how the standalone garmin/tom tom units that you can take from car to car work?

If so, that level of detail should be fine for me....would I be able to take this to any reputable stereo installer and have them figure out fabricating the lower bracket and trim part or should I take this to someone who has specifically worked on 968 interiors before?

I was wondering why cutting into the DME cables were necessary for that very point. I have a Tomtom and the speed & positioning is impressively accurate. Gives posted speed limt (65) and then my speed (95). As I come off and coast it drops right along with my speedometer.

maybe not necessary, but i do find that there are a LOT of times that both my garmin, and the pioneer are off by 100 feet - that is a huge problem if that 100 feet is behind you, and you missed your turn

as an example of how bad it can be, when i was in DC, i got stuck and could not figure out how to get out of town - i had to use dead reckoning and a compass to find my way out

if the speed sensor can help correct that by measuring distance travelled, i'm all for it

Yes, that is how it works. There is also a line to the reverse light to tell the NAV when you are going backward.

Pioneer makes an install kit that I used for my car. You do not need to fab ANYTHING. There are pics on this forum. The AVIC comes with a trim ring that fits perfectly. The big deal is the complete removal of the steel brace that the OEM radio/cubby sit in and cutting the plastic out to get a 2din from 2 1dins.

It is not a difficult job for a DIY or an installer, the trouble with the installers is that in my neck of the woods when you have a $1,000 unit and you put into a Porsche, they charge $400-$500 base fee plus extras.

It took me the weekend to do because I went very slowly and did some other stuff in the dash while it was open. It should take 2-4 hours if you don't mess around. I would recommend it as a DIY project...it felt great to see and hear the end results.

so have any of you that installed the pioneer unit with the motorized faceplate run into interference issues getting cds in and out? Is it a pain to get discs in with the shift knob in 1st, 3rd, 5th, etc?

I am finalizing my purchase choice this weekend hopefully...

There have been questions about the DYNAMICS display on the Pioneer NAV system that I installed in my 968.

I was in error when I said that you had to live with only 3 gauges; specifically: time, MPH and compass.

Today my son touched the DYNAMICS display and a new menu popped up.

It allows you to change the way the gauges look and it also allows the clock (position #1) and the compass (position #3) to be changed to several other gauge choices.

They are:

Clock

Voltage

Side Acceleration

Acceleration

Angular Velocity

Compass

The gauges have a peak hold function that can be cleared on this screen.

On the first dry day I plan to see what kind of peak 'G' readings I can get on the newly discovered gauges.

If you love your 968 DD, install this unit...it is amazing!

yup - i use them on the Z2 in the denali from time to time - haven't used them in the M3 yet - still, too difficult to make work as performance gauges though, in place of real gauges - it' an either/or situation - lots of steps to get from the main display to those - fine for an occasional check, but not terribly cool for performance driving

love the unit though, and if it had the audio section that my current one does, it would be a no brainer - i have a D1 sitting here that could go in - it has all the same functions

So the performance gauges only remain displayed for a limited amount of time, after whcih the screen goes back to the default? Isn't there a way to keep the gauges you're interested in on display for an indefinite amount of time?

no - they stay on, but you have to push some buttons to get there, and once you go back to the other screens, you have to push them again - not a one button access

Flash is correct. You can keep them on all the time if you want.

Actually, the dynamics screen can be called up from any point by pressing the MAP button once. To get back to any previous screen, you press the single rotary knob once. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/excl.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />It is a one button access!

They are "terribly cool for performance driving". It is a hell of a lot of fun seeing how many G's you can pull in acceleration and slide!!!!!

Flash, maybe the Z units and the D units before the D3 require more than one press, but the D3 does not.

They stay the way you have set them, the max/min settings reset when you turn the car off and back on. If you want to reset during a drive, you touch the reset selector.

yeah - if you set it to that page, and just want to toggle, it works like that (though the Z2 does not have that round button) - but, you cannot go one touch between map, audio, and dynamics - the round button is also tricky - a push to the side and you get something entirely different

still - a cool unit, and i love all of mine

So there are some new units out from Pioneer. They finally were able to get the navigation data on to flash memory so you can listen to music and adjust maps a the same time.

Does anyone know if one of these new units will fit in our car? Same install as D3?

I just went to the web site to check it out. Very nice.

Both units measure the same and the mounting holes on the sides appear to be the same.

The only thing that confuses me is that the D3 shows the mounting kit under installation accessories, but the new unit does not.

The 2 DIN mounting kit that I used is ADT-VA133.

Should work.

i realize that you can go back and forth between the front screen and the dynamics screen - what you can't do is bounce from that to nav to dynamics with one button - it takes 2 - i want to be able to leave the nav up, while seeing the dynamics - that i can't do

also, the response is pretty slow - fun nonetheless, but slow - i do use it though from time to time

as i said, if the audio section was better, and the above things resolved, i'd have one in the 968 too - i love the nav - the garmin i have for the 968 is just not the ticket - i could work out the guages, but i'd still be stuck with the limited audio section, which, for me, just isn't enough in this car, given the existing speaker locations and limitations - it's fine in the M3 and the denali though, and i love them there

the new f series have a pretty decent amount of audio control. Don't know if it's up to your standards, but worth looking at.

You lose the gauges though.
