My Air Box Mod
#21
IIRC, I got mine from Home Depot or Lowe's....
J.C......when you got your rings for the holes what were they called at Home Depot? Do you perhaps have a link?

thanks!

bulti - yes, wait

nibn - the stuff you get at home depot will NOT help the airflow. the entry is not nearly round enough. it will be cosmetic only, and may actually disrupt the air going in.

Another way of doing the same thing and easier is to drill holes using a hole saw, the size of computer rings about 2 inch size and glue them into the existing box. 2 on each side of the center flange where the snorkel attached to the box.

again - square corners are BAD for flow.

when i was first working on the final form of the airbox mod, i played around with different entry devices. the only thing that did't mess up the airflow were the very rounded edge subwoofer ports. it made a difference in power at high rpms. it wasn't huge, but it was there. i never got around to trying the velocity stacks though.

all of it is relative though, as there is almost as much open area at the OEM mouth as there is at all 4 holes. i did see some benefit though from modifying the OEM mouth to promote airflow

So I am curious, the PO did the mod on mine. They do have the rounded ports, which is good, but he left the snorkel in. I pulled it out and the big difference I noticed is the noise the car made went WAY down during acceleration. I do have a BB exhaust on my car.

I will have to get my sound meter and measure before and after if anyone is interested. To be honest when I first got the car it is the one thing I didn't like, the constant droning. It is now much better that the fuel pump noise bothers me more

Well before I forgot my point, is there something else to do with the snorkeler port, to round it out?

it's amazing how many people leave the snorkel in, even though they were instructed to remove it, and the gasket through which it went

i used a heat gun and deformed the front of the large opening to create a bell mouth, similar to that at the front of the OEM snorkel.

the B&B gives you a lot of that droning. i can't stand it. it also robs you of some low end torque. some people don't mind that or the drone. a personal thing i guess.

Good idea on the heat gun, will have to try that next time I have the airbox out.

I was debating removing the B&B, but had nothing to replace it with, little more bearable now! Only complements I get on it is when it is running at 6000+RPM on the track

Low end torque I can believe. Always feels like off the line the honda accords out accelerate me in traffic (not that I am even trying but still) Time passes by with many mid range econo cars having ~200hp/tq these days, I digress... I have my cayenne turbo s pig for the fun acceleration

Now that there may not be a flash in the pan solution to replace the exhaust, but an actual flash solution I will be replacing the exhaust...

nibn,

I ordered two sets of speaker ports from a seller on ebay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/390058624349?_tr...EBIDX%3AIT). The inside lip doesn't appear to be all that rounded, as 'flash' has advised they need to be, but I'll modify them when they arrive, with either some light sanding, or a quick pass round their inside circumference with my router, set to a low speed.

Flash, does the upgrade you have in mind require the stock air box? The PO of my car had a K + N installed and I dont want to mess with the box if I have to do something with it in the future. Thanks

Dremel would be lighter, if one were to go about the 'smoothing' freehand, but my router can be mounted underneath a portable table, so that all I have to do is set the depth for the curvature desired, and pass each baffle around against the freewheel on the router bit's tip poking up through the table's top surface. No fuss and no muss, so long as the bit doesn't catch the baffle and fling it across the garage.

lol - my concern would be that the material is so soft that the router bit will tear into it too much. i've messed with these a bit, and they are really pretty soft. the dremel would give you more control. but, have at it.

Check this out : Dodge copied the air box mod concept from this forum and no doubt in order to avoid a lawsuit made a slight design change as pictured here , lol.. The hollow headlight has an intake mechanism which gets even more cold, dense air into that engine !

So that's how you get 707 HP out of a car, eh ?!

funny stuff. i'm actually fiddling with engine bay air flow right now. i want to quiet down the engine bay by adding a blanket to the hood, but doing that increases under hood temps. so, i am working on improving air flow through the engine bay to offset the loss of the heat sink properties of the stock hood. the trick is to not let too much air in there and screw up the efficiency of the cooling system.
