lowering springs
#1

Hi guys

considering lowering the front springs and want to know what your thoughts are the car has koni sport shocks all round and m030 roll bars, i am happy with the ride but feel that the car sits quite high so thats why i am considering the change.

Here in the UK it seems that there are 3 main manufacturers PI, VENTURA and spax all lower the car by 30mm and i would like to know which one to go for and also if there are any other brands i should look at.

As always thanks in advance for all the help.Lets hope this thread does not do the way my "GUTTED MY CAT" thread went lol...

thanks again

Ha good luck - there are as many - probably more - opinions on suspension than on exhaust! I would say if you're happy with the ride of the stock springs with Konis and just want to go lower, consider M030 Koni struts. Same design, just with the height adjusting collars on them so you can set the ride height exactly where you want it, not just to what you'll happen to get with shorter springs.

Not sure if the threaded collars can be fitted to otherwise 'normal' front Koni struts.

Interesting thanks.

dont really want to change the front shocks as they are virtually brand new so the threaded collar's sound perfect shopefully someone else will chime in and say whether thats a option or not.

thanks again.

Check with Paragon. He has a set of Ground control collars that work with the original struts.

Hi i spoke to paragon, very nice people indeed and very helpful. I think i will will simply go for a set of lowering springs probably h&r (250 spring rate) what are your thoughts ?? is it true that lowering springs have a tendancy to rattle and bang over standard springs? or is this just hear say?

thanks again for all the help.

springs don't rattle or bang unless they are loose or too short.

that being said, i have heard about the "Harsh and Rough" springs sagging in a fairly short period. not sure what that's about.

I've used H&R springs exclusively on several BMWs, including my current one, and have never encountered this 'harsh and rough' phenomenon, or any sag whatsoever. In my experience they are high-quality German-made springs I wouldn't hesitate to use again. Of course, others may have had a different experience. Maybe the company has changed recently, I don't know. Just my two cents...

I have H&R springs on my turbo and have no issues with them. They work as advertised. I've never heard any bad reports on H&R before.

Just get the factory 968 Clubsport springs, they will lower your car 1" and don't cost much.

mdds: Just ordered a package from Jason with 250# springs and the adjustable ride height kit. I was wavering on 225# but as my rear sway is at full hard right now I reasoned it might not be too unbalanced. I could always add a rear helper later if need be.

Won't be able to give any feed back though until spring as the car is off the road for winter

Dave - Flash can chime in here because he knows more about chassis dynamics than the average bear, but don't equate stiffer springs with stiffer swaybars - they're entirely different animals. Stiffer front springs won't necessarily balance out a stiffer rear swaybar - in fact they may tend to cancel each other out. Stiffer front springs alone will INcrease understeer while a stiffer rear swaybar DEcreases understeer.

thanks guys much appreciated think i will give the h&r's a try, the club sport springs are very difficult to get hold of here in the uk. Also will they firt on the koni(sport) inserts?

I will let you know my thoughts once fitted unless i you can advise me on where to get the clubsport springs.

Bomb-Yea, I knew I was mixing apples and oranges when I made that connection. Hope the backlash won't hurt too much

They are still available new from Porsche through a dealer. If you're using stock springs now then yes they will fit.

while i have heard of sagging with H&R, i've also known people who didn't have it. seems to be hit and miss. the quality control just doesn't seem to be as good as with eibach, but it's a whole lot better than hyperco

as for the harsh and rough comment, that's just something that i picked up from others out there. it has not been my personal experience.

and yes, 250 is going to be problematic near the limits without adding spring rate at the rear. the car will understeer. normal street driving will likely not show the issue.

"but it's a whole lot better than hyperco" So i have the feeling these might be temp springs as that's all Paragon sells. I'll lower the rate to 225 and try them for the season until a DS1 alternative appears (possibly).
