Just got a new set of tires for the Mazda (tried posting in "non-porsche related" but that forum looks closed). I vacillated for a long time as to whether to sell the car and leave the tires up to the new owner. In the process the rears were absolutely bald. I have not run a set of tires that far down since I was 17 and had to choose between tires, gas, and beer (tires always lost).
I had Michelin PS2s at 4.5 years and 35K miles - very, very good results in my book.
Replaced them with Michelin Pilot Super Sports. And went from 245/45/18s to 265/45/18s. Mike says the car looks like a rally car because the tires stick out from the rims now. But man are they sweet. I was really babying the throttle with the old baldies, particularly when loading up the tires in long turns (like entrance ramps, for example). Got on it yesterday with the new sneakers and wow - what grip - feels like a whole new car.
Clearly my mileage will suffer until I burn off a mm or 2 of rubber <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.png" class="smilie" alt="" />
Now I am convinced that I need to move to 17s and maybe 18s on the 968 to get that extra rubber on the ground.
