Best F1 drivers - not just for F1 fans
#1

I thought this is a very good article ( and opinion ) on the topic of what factors in when deciding who the best driver of all time is, in light of different eras, technology, etc.. ( a subject often debated re many other sports when people compare how athletes or teams from different eras would do if competing against each other .).

The 2018 season started with a Sebastian Vettel win ( thanks to a mistake by the Mercedes team ) and then as he removed his helmet you could not help but notice that he must be using the same barber as Kim Jong Un . What the heck is that all about ?! Lewis Hamilton has a diamond in his nose , Sebastian Vettel has a halo haircut now... ugh. I think I'm having a " hey , you young punks , get off my lawn ! " moment , lol.

"Drivers, start your blame game". Another season of why I didn't win but should have. And a special class on how to put on wheel nuts properly - really?

Going to be a great season. Once ESPN figures out how to broadcast it.

And, yes, Dan, your age is showing :-)

Most people have crummy haircuts. It has nothing to do with young or old!

And proud of it Bob, we're in the right age club ..

Yes, Ferrari should be more competitive this year and I do expect an exciting season, I just wish they would have brought back the engines which sounded like true F 1 cars , instead of these muffled pathetic exhaust notes, which ruins a huge part of the experience ( for me, anyway ..) .

That said, a plug for Austin F1 ; if any of you have the opportunity to go there, by all means do it ! It's the only track on the entire global circuit where if you're seated in the middle to upper sections of any of the track's grandstands ( except the start / finish one , ironically ) you have a continuous view of approximately 75 % of the entire course, as opposed to the typical stand at other circuits where you might have a 50-100 yards isolated segment vantage point and subjected to just a few seconds of cars buzzing by you, after which you're just staring at a Jumbotron to see what's happening, until they come by again.. Circuit Of The Americas is vastly different, and as good as it gets in that regard , IMO .

I am still struggling to see how when the VS car is out and the race is (supposedly) neutralised, that some one can overtake in the pits, its not right and Ferarri exploited this issue, just wait till next VS car, the pits will be manic.

and those halo devices are not just about close to useless but very ugly too, they need to get rid of all these silly aerodynamic bits like 50 part element front wings, and get back to mechanical grip, and we might see some decent overtaking. bit like indy car.

think i will stick to watching the V8 super cars, Moto GP and BTCC far more entertaining, and the article is just about spot on.

Thanks for those links Chris, awesome stuff.      And on the F15 one I'm guessing the Gs on that bank are almost close to what I typically pull in the 968 on a fun run... no..  ?      Tongue

Terribly noisy cars. What do the people that live in houses near where those tracks were built are do when the cars are running? Must be horrible on property values.

Me, I'm signing up for the Tesla series.

Lol

I used to work in downtown Phoenix when they hosted the F1 races. Our office was right adjacent to the course. ESPN even used our garage for their camera crews.

I loved the sound of practicing all week and strolling through the pits However, everyone I worked with did nothing but complain about the noise and the traffic...I even took my son to watch the race from our office (for free).

Austin in October sounds doable. Any suggestions for which turn to get tickets for??

Ah, the Iceberg F1, little known fact Phoenix hosted the US Gran Prix on the streets of downtown Phoenix for several years. If you were watching from the street you could see about 10 ft of the track, had to know someone who worked in a tall building. You were lucky to work in tall places

Sorry, I should have mentioned a few other things about the stands ; For T 15 GS, I'd try to get into the segment closest to T 12 , in case T15 is sold out ( it often sells six to nine months in advance ) T 12 GS would be a good second choice and conversely, in the segment closest to T15 . Last , third choice ( my choice anyway ) would be T 11 GS.

And make a reservation at Lambert's restaurant in downtown Austin , mind blowing brisket and a bunch of other great BBQ dishes , and all that ( arguably ) in the middle of BBQ and brisket country ...

Thanks for the suggestions,I appreciate your knowledge of the venue!!

Actually, our office was on the second floor but, we could go up to higher floors in our building, but our floor was best because it was just slightly above the level with the VIP seats & had Windows all along 3rd avenue and Jefferson, but was closer to the "track" than the VIP stands (Jefferson street, which was the straight). We could see better than anyone in the stands and our parking garage was also really good, we just weren't allowed on the third level when ESPN was there...

Somewhere I have a photo i took of my 914 in the abandoned pits after one of the races...
