Items required for clutch replacement.
#1

My clutch has blown out on me, and unfortunately my 968 budget is a bit low at the moment. I got it apart, and discovered that one of the friction pads on the clutch plate had separated from the plate, so that the one item that I must replace. The pressure plate seems OK to me. Is there anything specific that I check on the pressure plate? How's the life on the release bearing... is that considered a standard item to replace? I am planning on replacing the pilot bearing in the flywheel since it's cheap, along with some of the hardware involved. Any other suggestions? Thanks!

I suggest that you replace the screws that mount the pressure plate unless you didn’t muck them up taking them out. Maybe you were lucky and some before you changed them out from the triple squares to hex heads.

Most of the stuff that may be worn out is in the clutch hardware kit that Paragon sells ($100 or so). Check the list of parts in that kit. I didn’t have to the needle bearings in the clutch fork but you may want to. Those are in the kit.

BTW, the throw out bearing is not in that kit.

yes, you MUST replace the screws

no, you do not HAVE to replace the pressure plate IF the surface is completely smooth, with no ridges, grooves, cracks, or severe bluing, AND the springs also look perfectly even and have good tension

that being said, if you have over 100k on it, i would replace it anyway

I agree with flash on the flywheel. I lost mine at 140k.

While you have yours apart I would replace it.

The DMF is probably past it's life expectancy.

You now have a choice between OE and the unit at RS Barn.

If money is tight and you can do your own wrenching, then wait. If you are paying a mechanic, do it now. It will save you about 4 hours of R&R time plus another $200-300 on a new disc.

Do not reuse either the flywheel or the pressure plate bolts.

Now might be a good time to replace the master and slave cylinders and get the stainless braided line from RS Barn.

If you are doing the labor yourself and your budget is tight, I agree just put a new disc in with new pressure plate bolts. Worst case is that you have to do it again in the near future because something else breaks or the pressure plate isn't flat and you get a lot of clutch chatter from a standing start. Either way, you aren't really out much other than your labor. The clutch is really very easy on these cars once you have done it once. Very nice piece of engineering on Porsche's part (certainly compared to 944 / 951's).
