How many underbody pans does you car have?
#21

craig - running without the pans is costing you some high speed grip (downforce), and costing you acceleration due to increased drag. you would be amazed at the effect. i'm currently working on creating pans for the denali, just to cheat the wind a bit, to add fuel economy. almost all new cars have them for that reason, as well as the others mentioned.

Flash,

As per the previous comment, my car, being a later model, did it come with the rear pans or had Porsche deleted these?

I didn't get the engine plastic shrouding with my car as by that stage, Porsche had cost cut it out.

Re: your post #19 - Actually, my problem sounds exactly like yours - it's OK under normal conditions, but struggles big time as soon as I put my foot in it. What did you do to correct it? I ceramic coated all the components that come into contact with the combustion process following your lead, with the idea that by confining the heat better within the combustion gases, less heat would make it to the base metals (where the temp sensor is located), and more would ultimately end up out the exhaust, aided by the increase in exhaust gas velocity as a result of the higher gas temperatures.

I agree that I could have an airflow problem - I'm confident the ductwork is all intact and correctly assembled - I'll post a picture tomorrow to confirm, but I'm still holding out hope the problem is with my temp switch. I yet again ran out of time to check its operation - tomorrow night for sure.

I have an A/F gauge, and it stays very close to 14.7:1 under steady state driving, but it goes off scale during decel and acceleration (need to confirm the latter, as I'm less sure of this), and I haven't done anything to change the A/F ratio. I do need to run a blink test, though, to confirm all the sensors are working correctly, as it's been a few months since I last did this.

I'll also hear back tomorrow from my second prospect for borrowing a belly pan, but from talking to him, it sounds like his car doesn't have one, either.

Mine is a late 94 so now I'm wondering if originally it came with any more than just one the pan behind the apron / batwing (front apron) / front pan or whatever else that thing is called. I never looked for mounting points behind the last pan, but if they're there I'll start looking for one, last thing I want to do is compromise even 1mph off the top end speed :-)

Has anybody ever installed a second coolant temp gauge and compared it's readings to the factory gauge. The gauge in the 968 is the most active of any car I have ever owned with the exception of a 944. We own three other cars beside the 968. In each one within 5 minutes of starting the gauge goes to about 11 o'clock and rarely moves from there. Could it be that the gauge design the 944 series cars is overly sensitive?

I have a 1994 cab, and the car had only the front apron when I bought it. I have since purchased both the plastic middle pan and the metal rear one, and the top plate over the radiator. However, my car does not have the rear mounting points that the rear tabs of the metal one connects to. I have been told that for my year 968 the metal pan was cut as a cost reduction. True? If so, I'll offer up my metal pan to someone for $30 + cost of shipping. It is missing some of the clip/bolt hardware, which should be easily remedied. IM me, and I can post/send pic if requested. By the way, my car has had absolutely no cooling issues since the new water pump and belts, and addition of the top plate and pan; and it maintains a very stable temp.

For those that don't know, the clips are just clip nuts, so they are only pennies.

What do you mean by the top plate over the radiator? Also, can you comment on whether adding the plastic middle pan had any impact on your observed temperature gauge reading, or did you change the pump at the same time?

I think the top plate metioned is a black plastic shroud if you will, that is clipped in place under the airbox.

Perhaps 4 inches wide, 25" across and covers a gap preventing heat from rising up into the engine bay.

That is what i see, if i am missing anything, let me know,

Thanks - that was my best guess as well, but wanted to confirm. I bought new clips for mine, and spend a lot of time making sure I had it clipped securely, with no air gaps anywhere. I even think I used more clips than my car had originally, so I'm pretty sure that isn't my problem, but I'll snaps some pics to confirm.

@astroede - 1) if the metal pan is the same for coupes as it is for cabs, and. 2) if it can be mounted on a late '94 ( CAN ANYONE HERE CONFIRM. 1 and 2 ? ) , I"ll PM you .

I see my car does not have the front batwing (front apron), but the other two bellypans.....do the S2 batwings fit the 968's? Or does the 968 have a specific batwing (front apron)?

That's very unusual, and must set up some real interesting under-body air flow dynamics. I have a front apron I'd be happy to sell you for a very reasonable price...

You definitely want to put that back on. One, for the air flow and two, it is structural and holds the front clip together and stops all the wibble-wobble that plastic does at higher speeds. I have an S2 as well and I think the wings might be close but the S2 has the 951 front end so there will surely be fitment issues.

the front aprons are not interchangeable.

the metal tray only came on cars up to mid 94. that same goes for the 2 louvered front side pieces.

you can retrofit the metal tray to later cars, but it requires either drilling or welding, so as to provide the 2 side mounting points.

I tried to send you a PM, but it says you can't receive any.....I would be happy to buy the "batwing (front apron)" from you, I am a stickler for having these types of things on my car.

Send me an email if you would paul at audipages dot com
