Stereo Wiring Question - door tweeter and Dynamat technique
#21

Im currently messing around with Morel Tempo 5's but if I cant get them to sound right Im going for something a bit different.

I cant help but think the 968 is possibly the worst car ever made to try and install high end audio. Its just one big resonance chamber. Dynamat is king!!

lol - it's not great. 3 major issues

1. speaker placement. i don't know about the rest of the world, but my ass doesn't hear a thing (makes plenty of it's own noise though). why they chose to put speakers there, when they had it right in the 944, is beyond me

2. hatch glass. can you say "dome". great for pushing sound forward. sure wish the speakers were back there so the glass could help. nothing but a road noise amplifier as it stands though.

3. road noise. there are not enough curves in the body, or breaks in the lines, to prevent large panel resonance. also, the sheet metal is paper thin, so no help there either.

the key to getting good sound from the 968 systems is first killing the things you are fighting (road noise, etc). then, putting speakers where they can be useful (this one may require some modification). lastly, component selection is important. the speakers need to be able to produce the frequencies you want (some like subs - some don't), and the amps need to be able to power those speakers (good speakers require more power than a deck will provide). deck choice is really not important, other than to ensure that it has a decent EQ section. without EQ, you will be fighting things no matter what you do. bass and treble are not enough.

Agree with all the above. The factory woofer mounts are wrong for so many reasons:

1. Point at arse (uk spelling and last time i checked I have no ears there)

2. Point at floor

3. Arent sealed

4. Rattle like crazy

5. Puts back of factory woofers a few mm from door card/armrest. Most aftermarket woofers touch.

6. Is that foam into the door panel an attempt at an AP enclosure?

7. Last but not least, half the woofer is obstructed door pocker/speaker cover

After all that any backwave that hasnt already escaped into the cabin ends up in the cavity behind the rear speaker via the vent, resonates like hell and then enters cabin via the gaps around stock rear speaker mounts or the rear quarters.

All this stuff becomes increasingly apparent the more power you apply.

If I cant get what I want out of my current equipment, Im going to fabricate some door pockets/speaker covers to house a ported 6.5" woofer. More importnatly Im going to make the pocket a more useful shape and include a cup holder!

Will run than woofer to somewhere around 300-400hz, then will install a 3" fullrange in the factory tweeter position. Should guarantee some great midbass and staging.

ok - i couldn't find my own post - here is a pic

in addition to what you see, there is now a midrange, with a separate controller, in the factory tweeter location. the tweeter is installed concentric to the woofer down below. the pockets are from a 944.

Any chance of a pic of how it looks now? Is the midbass much better?

Regardless of how it sounds I know you'd love a cupholder in that pocket!

that is how it looks now. the mid is in the OEM tweeter location. the woofer is as shown. the tweeter is concentric to the woofer.

no need or desire for cupholder in door. lousy place for one. every tried closing the door with a drink in there? i have 2 cupholders mounted to the side of the passenger side tunnel wall.

Ah....Interesting. Did you try other locations for the tweets?

no - i deliberately wanted them down low. the OEM location is too close to my ear. it doesn't help that i have a cab either. as soon as you get going, you start losing everything but the tweeter. moving it down low really helped out a lot. i barely use the midranges too.

as it is, i have a different eq program for top up versus top down.
