Heavy clutch operation

Just bought a 94 968 cabriolet,this will be a sister to my early 944 that has given good service over the years.

One thing i notice after the 944 is the heavy force needed to opperate the clutch,

is this normal or is the unit on the way out or in need of adjustment?

I am in the UK, rather damp at the mo! car go's like the clappers and sticks to the road like glue!

that is odd - one of my main complaints about the clutch on the 968 is that it is way too light in feel (not nearly as bad as our E46 bmw though)



there isn't any adjustment of the clutch itself, but there is pedal adjustment at the spring at the pedal - the procedure and specification is in the workshop manual on page 30-5



it's also possible that somebody put in a heavier pressure plate - i put in a 3200lb unit to firm it up

The clutch hydraulics ie master cylinder and slave have been replaced before i bought the car by the previous owner.

Could the fitting of an incorrect bore size master or slave cylinder make it act heavy?

Pedal needs to go nearly all the way down,cripes in stop start traffic it is a pain.

Winger, it could be caused by the adjustment of the counterbalance spring above the pedal or it could be too much friction on the shaft that the clutch disc slides on. You can adjust the counterbalance spring pressure by getting on your back under the dash and adding more tension. The shaft can be cleaned and lubricated from underneath the car by removing the rubber clutch inspection cover and using a light to look inside. I cleaned mine with some solvent on a rag then put some moly - lube on it with another rag. Good luck, Bob blackwell.

Nice 'cab. One of my cab's had a n extremely heavy clutch, I ending up replacing the clutch and flywheel. The other cab has a heavy clutch but everything is in good working order and inspected fine, so four years and 27K miles later it is still a heavy clutch

Is the clutch on these a DMF type?

Have had a good look and found the clutch shaft was dry,

Cleaned with brake cleaner and sprayed with white grease,so far so good on the lighter pedal feel.

Have not checked the counter balance spring as yet.

Looking down through the housing from the top the clutch disc seems Ok,plenty of lining left and even .
