Guards or Quaife LSD?
#1

Both Guards Transmission and Quaife make a torque biasing LSD for the 968. Any difference between the two

products? I have heard positive things about the Guards unit on this forum but nothing about

the Quaife.

Thanks for chiming in if you have an opinion. Cheers!

Guards also make a motorsport(clutch) type lsd, which is more suitable for track work as it helps the stability of the car under braking,(I have a similar type in my car)Quaife/torque biasing works under acceleration only, fine for the street, less maintenance than clutch type, and quieter in operation.

Scott, I have no experience wit the Guard LSD but I had the Quaiffe LSD installed in a previously owned 924S and was completely satisfied with it. The car was my daily driver as well as week-end fun car and I used it for Autocross and DE Events. It corrected the problem of the inside rear wheel spinning when taking tight corners and accelerating hard. No problems with the car for my four years of use and it is still performing well for the new owner. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

most people i have heard using the quaiffe have been happy, but i have heard of a couple of people who had issues with the quaiffe - it was years ago, and nothing i could pin down to being a problem with the unit itself, and could have been the installation - i did read something about a problem with it on 968uk about 6 months ago, but i can't remember what it was

i have had the guards unit for 3 years now, and am VERY satisfied with it - i know a few others who have had the same experience - i know of nobody who has had a problem with the unit, its installation, or the company

I have had a Quaiffe in my 968 for four year of abuse and it's been perfect. The day I installed it my car was transformed. My driving was all autocross at that point, but I'm sure I'd be burning up the inside tire on tracks as well without it. I've never driven a clutch LSD for any amount of time so I don't have an opinion on the difference. Hmmm, maybe that's why my car moves a lot under heavy breaking.

Sending my other trans out to California Motorsports in a week or so for a rebuild, including Quaife. I am going with 'Q' because of maintainance ease, set-up ease, cost, and I don;t plan on racing everyday. Also, Quaife offers a lifetime warranty......apparently, even if you race with it.

That's good, because since I am not buying the California 968, I will need all the cash to pay "Bobby" so he can put his kidz through college...

Just a noob question: Is there a difference between the Quaife and Torsen diff?

From what i understood, a torsen diff is purely mechanical and works with the principle of worm gears only being able to transfer power in one direction. Does the same principle apply when it comes to Quaife?

Furthermore, can someone explain what the difference is between the 3 types of torsen diffs?

I'm really considering installing one of those as one of my first mods but i can't figure out which to choose.
I don't consider clutch types because i'm a very bad mechanic. No maintenance = Good! Also, i really can't drive for s*** so any slight perfomance advantage isn't an argument for me

quaiffe is a torque biased differential (as opposed to clutch type) as is the torsen and the guards - they all do much the same thing

quaiffe is made in the UK
torsen is german
guards is US

they all differ in lockup rate

Torsen being short for TORque SENsing. I think they invented the design and now the brand is used not only describing a brand but also a concept, kinda like Kleenex.

There is a new clutch-type LSD available from Pete at RSBarn - less expensive than the Guards. I have had it in my car since April and I'm pretty pleased with it.

+1. Its like woodstock all over again!

I believe the factory supplied LSD is Torsen.

I allways thought the factory LSD was a clutch type? Can someone clear this up? Which specific type of LSD was offered for the 968?

I'm considering installing a Torsen T1. Maybe a T2® or quaife, but momentarily a T1 tops my list. If the factory LSD is in fact a Torsen, it would be a very interesting option.

the earlier lsd cars had clutch types (option code 221) the later lsd cars were torsen (option code 220)

i get those two numbers reversed a lot, but i think that's right

Mine's 220 and a torsen. I thing the clutch (ZF) were only available in '92 as a side option to the torsen unit.

while both were options, and not standard, pretty sure the torsen was not available in 92, and only the clutch type - not sure if the clutch type continued to be available or not after 92

Installed a Quaife in my car after the turbo conversion. Transformed the entire car! Very happy. Mind you that it is a street car, would it be for the track I would have made another choice.

Cheers, Joel
