Get Ready - Get Set - BLOW!!!!

Yeah - car shipping has remained cheap - I shipped a ITS RX7 race car from Miami to NYC for $650 open trailer two summers ago.

You make some good points on knowing the car and the motor - you will get better development data and all of the customers should take note on the rigor of methodology - I bet most would just develop on a work horse and the results would be less accurate.

this certainly isn't the easiest or least expensive way to go about it, and i have to be very careful not to screw up paint and such, but it is the best way i have available to get repeatable results

the only better way would be to rebuild an engine in a test car and go from there

i've been on it nearly all day today too - making some real progress

nothing to show that would make sense yet, and given the recent nonsense, i'm not posting any pics until it really looks close to what the kit will look like when it's done - sorry

going back down to the shop now

it's pouring here and i'm waiting for the garage to warm up a bit before i go back down to work on the kit, so i thought i might pass along some info

i did some testing the other day - i was checking to see how effective some old and new improvements were - i was looking into underhood temps - this comes into play when contemplating a supercharger, as any increase in underhood temp translates to increased intake temp

in designing this kit, one of the critical components is keeping the supercharger cool - it won't do a lot of good to take the air in from a cool spot, if the supercharger itself is immersed in hot air - so, i have been working on isolating it from hot air, and reducing the overall underhood temps - heat soak from things like the radiator and exhaust would raise the supercharger temps to much higher levels than desired - add in the compression temp increase from boost, and the intake temps could easily soar over 200 degrees - not good

when i checked this before i did any of my work, when i was developing the exhaust heat shield, it was about 68 degrees outside, and clear weather - the underhood temps near the intake manifold on stock layout were nearly 200 degrees after sitting in traffic and about 180 at freeway speeds, pushing to over 350 near the exhaust, and near radiator temp anywhere near the radiator

then i decided to check the new stuff - it was about 62 degrees outside, sunny, and not a cloud in the sky - i got the car good and warmed up before i did any of this - oil temps were near 200 and water temps were about 175 (that's as warm as my car runs)

i placed the sensor above the intake manifold - this read about 80-85 degrees at freeway speed, and would go as high as 140 sitting stuck in traffic for 20 minutes like i was - this was an amazing nearly 40 degree improvement sitting still to almost 100 degree improvement when moving

then i placed the sensor in the area between the front engine bay plastic cover and the engine bay, over on the driver side, to see what the temps were in that area - i expected heat soak from the radiator, but due to the new parts, they were amazingly close to the intake point - i only picked up 2 degrees - that was about a 100 degree change

then i placed the temp sensor at the intake, just to see what temp that was - i was surprised to see that it was reading almost 5 degrees BELOW ambient at freeway speeds - it would react fairly quickly to speed changes, and come back to ambient when i stopped, so it was accurate, but i didn't expect wind chill on a temp sensor

between the oil cooling system the Rotrex already comes with, and the additional heat controlling parts, as well as a few more we have in mind, we expect the intake temps to be VERY low for such a system, and likely only about 50 degrees above ambient - this pushes its efficiency up and allows for more boost without creating detonation problems and such - we still aren't looking to increase boost, but this certainly goes a long way toward making it safe

also, we are tuning on 91 octane, to be able to run in areas where higher octane fuel is not available - anywhere you have higher octane fuel, you will have even more safety margin

obviously i'll do more testing and provide more data, but so far it looks like everything is coming together nicely - all the little items like this will make for a very complete kit that will provide repeatable and dependable results

nothing is hard to install either

Flash.... with all the variables you are trying to cater for, do your calcualtions cater for a 92 ROW car, 95 octane, 1700m above sea level?

we are NOT building multiple versions, nor will it be "tweakable" - if somebody is thinking they are going to buy this and then try to alter it and get more out of it, forget it - there are a number of things that would hinder that, and i'll go into them more as soon as we have this working - as i have said though, this kit will be like no other

to be clear, because we are developing this to be a universal kit, we are building ONLY for 91 octane - we think it would be irresponsible to develop it for higher octane fuel, especially since we are doing this with CARB in mind - higher octane will not likely increase performance, or have any detrimental effect, but will provide a better "cushion" against detonation

altitude is a factor, and we will be considering that, but traditionally forced induction works better at altitude than it does at sea level

Flash - I read on another thread concerning this supercharger "92 models would not be good candidates due to the connecting rod issue on those cars". It was written by someone else. I can't see any mention of this issue on this thread. Can you clarify please.
Thanks

we will be very clear about this in the information package that will go out once this is finished, but suffice it to say that we do NOT recommend this or ANY forced induction on a 92 with the early rods - we are in the process of figuring out where the cutoff is on when they changed the rods, and will post more definitive information as soon as we have it ready

Hopefully you will have better luck than I had trying to obtain info from Deutschland. I just posted a response that I received yesterday from the Motherland under "Misc" "What do you think" "production data from Porsche Germany" I'm convinced after reading the resposnse from Porsche - that either they just don't want to deal w/ it, or Markus really does only have an abacus and punch card at his disposal.

Good Luck!

"the more i learn about the Rotrex the happier i am about the choice - it looks to be by far the best unit for this application, with better reliability, lower operating temps (which means better efficiency and fewer issues), and better low end and midrange (which is what this car really needs)"

Think I tried to convince you of that 2-3 years ago.

lol - yeah yeah

i knew about the rotrex from way back when we did the chip shootout test - the company i was using for the dyno testing also did rotrex kits, and tried to convince me to do a kit for this car - i tried then to get enough interest going to develop the kit - all i got was grief from a few certain people on .net who didn't like the concept of a centrifugal supercharger (or at least it coming from me and not them)

then i started talking about it again, and you and i spoke - you did urge me enough to pursue it again and try to work it out, and we both knew who to talk to - again though, a whopping 6 people showed interest - there was also what we thought to be a serious enough complication to make it cost prohibitive

now, attitudes seem different, so we are going forward - this is largely because i didn't care if it ever got developed as a kit or not - i wanted it on my car - the rest is gravy

but i appreciate the support and prodding, and accept the poking - you are not alone in saying "finally"

Bob- wasn't necessarily looking for pics, mostly just more detail to keep us salivating.

Keep up the fantastic work!

no worries - i am hesitant to release a lot of detail until i have definitive things to say - i'm not looking to get slammed by those who would lurk, read all about this, and then spout off things that are both erroneous and ignorant in a place where we cannot comment - it's better that i wait

the project continues to develop, with a few changes along the way as i figure things out that work better - taking my time on this has been both frustrating and productive - i have resolved a lot of things that might have "worked fine" but could have been clumsier or less thought out than they will be now

in the next few days i should have most of everything worked out and be able to put up both shots and more detailed descriptions

i am getting help from some of the members too - it has been gratifying and pleasing to see others jumping in to assist - i love the idea of others participating in completing something that has been forefront in my mind now for years - it says a lot
