Get Ready - Get Set - BLOW!!!!
#81

lol - funny how that kind of thing does it for me - makes ayn crazy

this kit is really coming along though - except for the same standard bosch blow off valve that everybody uses, it now does not resemble at all any other kit for this car, in any component - it just got easier to install, and will likely be ready a lot sooner than i feared might happen because of the holidays - we are now set for tuning right after the 1st of the year - then it will be ready right after we take it to the track and beat the heck out of it, and then let it sit on the 405 for an hour

Not the 405! I'm assuming you'll sub that part out? I think I would beat myself senseless with wooden shoe before I sat on the 405 for an hour... I wouldn't wish the 405 on my worst enemy!

Trust me - I understand. Years ago, I was spending a great deal of time in the UK and there was some "educational" material on the tele - "The Life and Times of the Sewing Machine" was particularly informative - and to this day, my family won't let me forget that I enjoyed the program.

Talk about taking the High Road...
Bob and I have been talking and planning a SC for years.
For me, other projects have been more important.. And as RSB has become a major Race shop, We haven't had as much time to develop everything.
I've had a 300hp engine project underway for 3 years. I'm actually going to the dyno tomorrow night with the first test of Stage 2 intake. This wiil then be tested on the Monster Motor at Michael Mounts shop.
As everyone (including Rlisters) knows, we have now committed to develop, test and complete a Complete SC System
You know this is going to work............
Only the Naysayers try to diminish the work we do.

more progress made today - parts list almost complete - drawings in progress - will have a good amount of time this weekend, and wife will be in romania for a week in the middle of the month, so i'll be immersed in this project - i expect to have the first prototype parts being made next week - hopefully fitting everything between the holidays

p.s. - to address those who would like to sling mud and hide out where they can't be addressed (not that anybody listens to them anyway), to point out how long i have had this idea of a centrifugal unit retaining the AC and such, i did a quick search and found the dates of when i first started this idea on this site - how does April of 2006 sound? then again in August of 2008? it was always the same Rotrex unit too, and while i don't think i specified the unit in my posts, i did reference the origin of where i found out about it, and there are a number of members here with whom i discussed it all along the way - they have not stepped in to inform the naysayers of this, and i understand not wanting to start up a fight - i'm also quite sure it will all come out sooner or later that i had this idea long before the thoughts of the recent other kit were announced, and put to rest all of the nonsense

anyway - on to the fun - i hope to have some progress pics in time for xmas

just about done designing the brackets and such - working out very nicely - so far it looks to be a very simple install and no clumsy hose cutting or hard to install parts - should be making some test fit pieces this weekend and finalizing them this week

one thing i need to do though is return my car to stock exhaust (as well as everything else) for the first tests - i no longer have my full stock system - does anybody in the l.a. area have a full stock exhaust system i can borrow for the dyno tests? i'd hate to have to yank the one off of the white car

p.s. - in the holiday spirit, we contacted santa and he is going to let us peek at his "naughty and nice" list to help figure out who gets one of these - ho ho ho

Man I wish you'd have done this a year or two ago.
You know I'm in, if I get back in the seat.
This is the upgrade I've always longed for. I'm so happy
to see it come from your ideas to a tangible product.

picking up some of the parts for the assembly in the next couple of days - this has been fun for sure

along the way there have been some very cool developments that are sure to make most of you very happy (and probably upset a few others who don't want us to succeed at anything - to them i say "have a coke and a smile") - there will be some new products associated with this, as well as a couple of much needed modifications to improve reliability of normally aspirated cars too

this promises to be a good week - i'm running up against the holidays for prototype machining, but i'm going to keep plugging and hope i can convince people to make stuff for me anyway

still hoping to be able to show you some pics before xmas

Flash, your excitement over this project is infectious. I'm sure the end result will be spectacular. Did read somewhere that it will include a carbon fiber hood to offset the extra weight? I'm kidding, of course, but I wouldn't put anything past you...

thanks - working hard to speed this along, after all the years of talking about it, now that we are finally doing it

it's hard sometimes though to stay positive, what with a few sour grapes calling us "unscrupulous" and accusing us of "ripping off" a design, even though it has NOTHING in common with what we are doing - but, we know the truth, and soon enough, so will everyone else

it's also hard not to skip steps - but, we want to make sure it's complete and safe to run

that's why we have always said we would start with a tight engine - we didn't want to start with a tired one, develop the power and boost, and then stick it on a tight engine and watch it blow up

that's why we are working so hard to retain the factory cooling system

that's why we are taking the extra steps to build an airbox

that's why we are reinforcing some components we know already fail on a normally aspirated engine, and would certainly fail in time with a supercharger

that's why i am developing this on my own car, and not somebody else's - we were going to do this on another test mule, but after thinking about it, i figured if i'm not willing to risk my own engine in doing this, how can i expect anybody else to step up? this also speeds up the process, since i won't have to keep R&Ring the system and shipping it back and forth across the country

i'm returning the car to stock for this - i'll do before and after tests - i'm not just doing dyno runs either - i'm going to do 0-60 runs, 1/4 mile runs (if i can find a safe place to do it), and i'm going to show real gear by gear acceleration runs (i.e. 4th gear 40-60, etc) - i'll also be showing intake temps, cooling system temps, yada yada - this will give a very real representation of what it does, and hopefully answer a lot of questions before they are asked

so, i'll just ignore the sour grapes - nobody really listens to them anyway - i'll stay positive and focused on the goal

lol - i am SO looking forward to hershey this year

"i'm not just doing dyno runs either - i'm going to do 0-60 runs, 1/4 mile runs (if i can find a safe place to do it), "

Ooh - Ooh - there's a perfect place just near my house. Of course you'll need a right seater to keep times Seriously if you need me to hold a stop watch just let me know - I'll be there in an hour.

"that's why we have always said we would start with a tight engine - we didn't want to start with a tired one, develop the power and boost, and then stick it on a tight engine and watch it blow up"

I get the statement - to get numbers that would excite people on an engine starting with 175 pounds you'd need to over boost for a tight engine. However, isn't the converse also perversely true, in that a system that will work well on a tight engine will just kill a tired engine? Or is that more of a reliability thing than a transient spike in pressure thing?

the short answer is "yes"

head gasket disintegration over time is a very real issue on these engines

as i have said in the "contemplation" thread, forced induction on a tired engine is a BAD idea - anybody worth their salt will tell you that you should not add forced induction to any engine with more than 40k or so miles on it unless the head gasket is less than 5 years old - further, it is not wise to add forced induction to a set of valves and/or guides that are worn either, even if the head gasket is fresh - while this is not usually fatal, it won't run as well as with new ones

the first thing to do is make sure everything is up to snuff - failure to do that will likely result in a repair bill - the good news is that since you needed it anyway, this would only insure that you get the most out of such a mod

this thread will help:

well, it looks like the weather is cooperating tomorrow, and i am off to pick up some parts for the assembly - then i will take advantage of the storm blowing in and spend the next couple days fitting things into the engine bay and working out the plumbing

i am having a very hard time containing myself about some details i would love to disclose, but have to wait until the system is done - they will be unique to this system, have never been incorporated into any system on a 968, and will prove to be the defining traits that will establish this as the perfect system for most drivers

the more i learn about the Rotrex the happier i am about the choice - it looks to be by far the best unit for this application, with better reliability, lower operating temps (which means better efficiency and fewer issues), and better low end and midrange (which is what this car really needs)

we are so happy that we spent the time to do the homework on this, and really seek out the best components and technology - it has definitely developed into something that we dreamed of, but assumed we would have to compromise on somewhere along the way - once we tossed out the old school concepts though, everything changed - as it looks to be turning out, i don't think we will have to make any compromises at all

and we are still on track for our sub $4k price point too
