M030 brake disc replacement, EBC parts?
#1

Hi,

does anyone have any experience with EBC brake discs? Unfortunately, I need to change the front discs on my M030 CS and wonder if there is any way around the original Porsche parts, which cost a fortune.

Having said that, the EBC discs aren't that cheap, either. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Or could you recommend an alternative?

thanks

adam

escaping me at the moment, but somebody came up with rotors for the M030 that were pretty inexpensive - it was discussed not long ago (6 months maybe)

Can't you guys use Zimmermans? As far as I knew, EBC made pads, not rotors but I could be wrong. The pads aren't anything to rave about in my opinion. Or at least not for the track.

Adam, when I converted my front brakes to M030 specs (using parts from the 1987 928S4) I bought the new front rotors/discs from Sunset Imports. The total price was $234 including shippping from Oregon to New Mexico. That doesn't seem too much for original equipment parts to me. www.porscheparts@sunsetimports.com Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

Bob, what year was that?

Mark, the year of the 928S4 brakes which correspond to the 968 M030 front brakes is 1987 and newer. The year that I bought the rotors/discs from Sunset Porsche is 2006. good luck, Bob Blackwell.

Thank you for answering that question both ways as I was not specific that I was looking for the S4 model year.

thanks for the replies.

Thing is that I am located in Hungary, Europe. So Sunset is not an option, I am afraid <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />.

As for Zimmermann, I read mixed reviews on German and English forums.

I also found the following lines in GT Purely Porsche magazine's tech article on brakes:

"...it must be noted that Porsche does not drill its discs; the holes are cast into the discs when they are being manufactured, so discs are created to be strong with holes as part of the initial design. However, if you cast the disc and then drill the holes, you are effectively weakening its structure. The disc has been created as a solid entity and the holes would therefore be removing part of the structure and thus part of its structural integrity."

Now, as I am not an expert, this also could be BS, but to me it sounds acceptable.

I have found EBC rotors on ebay.co.uk which cost 20 % less than original porsche parts (not much of a discount). Whereas, the Zimmermanns you are referring to cost less than half the price of the original discs.

The original parts cost 540 euros a pair, that would be around 700 USD.

So apart from the original Porsche parts, is there any brand that you'd recommend?

thanks

Wow! Have you checked with Sunset? For the difference in price you could pay shipping and still come out ahead, good luck, Bob Blackwell.

I can only recommend the genuine porsche rotors - from my experience on both cars (944tS ans 968), the genuine rotors are more stable and last longer than the zimmermans. I've used EBC rotors and pads (reds) on my turbo Sube and 3000GT and have not been impressed with stopping torque or wear. FWIW

I had a set of EBC rotors on my wifes Mazda3.....they did the job, but weren't overly impressive (coupled with EBC greenstuff pads)

about a year ago, some vendor came on here and said they had started carrying M030 size crossdrilled rotors that were not terribly expensive - doesn't anybody remember who that was?
