Front Struts Question

Let me chime in by saying that I have the same problem, and just ordered a set of Bilstein front struts with Eibach springs, and rear Bilsteisn, for $822, from Ground Control. This is a "bolt in", requiring nothing but perhaps the air-scoop mount.



I went this route because I believe Bilstein's to be a better road shock, as evidenced though my last few cars. I am hoping it to be the same results with the 968.

Josh, I agree that it is time to replace your struts. There is usually quite a bit of resistance to pushing in on the strut. I have used the Koni Yellow, gas adjustable struts on both of my 968s, my 944S2 and my 924S with excellent results. I use my car as a daily driver and occasional track car and I like the option of setting it firm for the track and softer for street driving. Paragon Products has a good program to exchange your old struts for the struts with Koni Inserts installed. www.paragon-products.com. Jason burkett is very knowledgeable about our car. I have noticed the famous 'clunk" sound from the driver's front suspension.

I pulled the wheel and followed flash's guide, as listed earlier in this post.

Nothing made the clunk sound when the car was jacked off of the ground.

I did a visual and checked all nuts for tightness. All was fine.



I took her to the PM today and he checked it out. When rolling, every bump produces the noise, but when the load is off of the wheels (on a lift) we could not get the noise to re-appear.



My PM checked everything that he could think of and nothing looked wrong. The only thing that he could suggest was that the lower bearing in the upper suspension strut mount. # 951-343-017-04



He does not have the spring compressor that will fit inside the wheel well so he has to remove the strut to see if the bearing in the mount is bad.



R&R to see if that is it is about 2 hours. (Wasted cash if he is wrong.)

If he is right I'll do both sides. That will be about 3 hours and 2 suspension strut mounts @ $ 400 EACH!



Anyone have any other ideas as to what it could be? A $200 look-see exercise does not appeal to me.

Does anyone out there know if the 968 strut has a threaded cap on the top of the strut tube? The Bilsteins that are available have threaded collars which are supposed to (according to a bunch of sellers) fit the 968 strut. I have never been a big Koni fan, so I would like to go with the Bilstein B6, providing it will work on a 92 968 strut. The rears look like they are a standard replacement part.

I did the Koni insert conversion to the stock 968 strut a few years back and I don't recall there being any threaded section. In the conversion the top is cut off the existing unit to gain access for the new insert.

If you are going B6

 

You will need to hack 42mm off the top of the strut, empty the guts in a bucket, then weld a collar into the top of the strut

 

you can buy some BMW motor cycle exhaust nuts that fit, Motorrad 0641702141921 they are about $10 each.

 

drill the top of the strut case and plug weld in four places then seam weld the tops

 

insert strut, do up nut thats in the box, fit bellows, no need for bump stops they are built into the insert

 

re-geo and away you go

 

done five sets of struts now

Thanks Waylander, that's great information.

 

Is there a reason that someone doesn't just thread the strut with a M50 x 1.5 die nut? That would seem to be the easiest solution, unless the strut is too short and the insert requires a threaded collar to add length to the strut tube.

 

I wonder if those exhaust nuts are available on my side of the pond?

the strut walls are fairly thin, i would not want to trust them with any kind of energetic driving,

 

i wonder just how much a M50 x 1.5 die costs along with the handle to turn it

 

not too shocking

It's been a while but as best I can remember I chopped the top off of a couple Jetta struts in the scrap yard and welded on.  They are threaded. Think the Jetta strut might have slipped right over the porshe tube so was easy to weld fast.
