Front struts
#1

Sorry if this has been covered before, and sorry for the newbie question...

The top picture is a 92 968; the second picture is a 94. There is a semicircular "ridge" on top of the struts of the 94; it appears the 92 does not have this ridge. Why the difference?

Thanks in advance.

The 92 in the top picture has the Koni adjustable struts that are part of the M030 option package. The 94 has the standard struts.

I have a 95 with Koni adjustables - and the "ridge" is still on my car. I have a vague recollection of these being some kind of counterweight - but it's been along time since there was any discussion, and it was on 968.net. Maybe someone else will remember - or know.

I had to go out the garage to check. I was mistaken....Doh!! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/unsure.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> My '95 M030 also has the ridge. Could it be that the non-M030 cars don't have the ridge? Or maybe the earlier model years don't have them. Now I need to know too.

If I recall the earlier post, the weight was added in 1993 to aid in resonance/balance.

They were on late model 944 Turbo S's and 944S2's, then went away until 1993, then back on 968's. I have seen both from various years. 1988 Turbo's (non-M030 S's) don't have them, but 88' Turbo S's do. 944 S2's all have them so far as I can find. I am unsure if it makes a difference, but when I reinstalled the stock suspension (was sold to me as the stock suspension) it had the counterweights. So my 92' that I just sold had counterweights.

Porsche's answer to any problem was to add a dampner or ballast. I had a 66 911 that had huge cast-iron weights molded into the front bumper. This was never advertised, but it was to help balance.

I think the weights on the strut bearing caps are to keep a noise problem from occuring. One of mine has fallen off and I can tell no difference though.

Lets talk about the big ass weight in the back of the cabs.

The list most likely goes on......

The ones with out the weights look like they are the earlier style upper strut mounts off of a 944. They are a cheaper alternative when the originals fail.

What "big ass weight in the back of the cabs"? Mine doesn't have one. (I removed it more than three years ago and it's sitting on a closet floor.)
