Pete had told me about a guy in NC i believe that was soon to have a splitter that’s a close match to the Turbo one. Fitment was expected to be better then most. It would come with the under tray "batwing" and the cost was estimated to be around $300. I was eagerly anticipating its release. Then I was informed by a fellow member here what he heard through the grape vine, Which was that this guy wont be doing that splitter now as other pressing life issues are in the way.

So I would like to officially make a humble request from the good folks (Flash) at Design 1.

I assume you tossed this idea around once or twice already. So were does it fit in:
Something that’s in the works
Development is too costly.
Not enough interest
Too many other things on your plate
You will only make one for Rhudeboye

no, not for sale - mine (and the one other one like it, are the only ones we did) - there wasn't enough interest in doing it to justify repetition - it would take at least 10 pre-sold units to justify the mold cost, and so would probably cost about $450 each in the first batch

strosek makes one though - i don't know yet how it fits, as i don't think it has been installed by anybody here yet - it's pretty pricey too

Yeah. I have a quote from them. The cost of the unit is pricey enough but then you have to add shipping. We started a group buy not too long back but I was the only one fully committed.

Yeah, not ready to do anything money wise here either, however, I'd definitely be interested as I'd like to replace the batwings on both cars. I like the idea of a one piece batwing/splitter unit. I guess you'd ship them primed and ready for paint? Fiberglass or plastic? As a side note, the most recent price (10/9/09) from Sunset on a new batwing was $246.25 so 400-ish for an integrated splitter isn't outrageous. So, 10 gets it down to 450...if more people can commit via pre-paid orders, can the cost get down to around the 350 mark? That's probably the magic number for me.

fiberglass - mine is and it presents no issues - i've bumped this one, cuffed it on driveways, and generally abused the heck out of it with no ill effects - because it wraps around, and has no edge to speak of, it is MUCH stronger than the other fiberglass units

I don't necessarily need a push...just a bigger slush fund and less time required to replentish!

My thought is that anyone considering buying a splitter should be a candidate AND anyone who has a beat up batwing and front valance should be a candidate since replacing the batwing alone will cost roughly 300. Seems like a no brainer to me, replace the old and broken with something new and better...unless for whatever reason some folks may hate the look of a front splitter.

flash, you didn't mention the finish...primed, ready for paint I suppose? Bare, raw? Any decent paint shop should be able to shoot it for 150 bucks or so, maybe less.

yup - primed - like all fiberglass parts, it would probably need some finish sanding, depending on personal preference

but unless the "weather" changes dramatically, we are a LONG way off from this happening

So, if I understand correctly, this Design 1 model would be a single one piece unit consisting of the splitter & a bat-wing? As Darryl stated, if you have a beat up bat wing (I do) then it's a no-brainer. I would commit to one of these for the price. As far as painting, would a good rattle can job be the way to go? My car is black so I am thinking it would be easy / cheap / no problem matching color.

Actually. Darryl has 2 68's so that makes 4. Almost half way there.

All joking aside. This is an item that I see selling well. As mentioned, the batwings and lower grills get abused from day to day driving. Even from those of us that dont use them as DDs. With the prototype all ready completed seems as if it would be a quick turn around.

i wouldn't say "quick", but yes it can be done

i would need to make another one first, as i am not inclined to take mine off the car - then i would need to have a negative mold made from that - then a positive mold from that - then we could start laying them up

all in all, probably 6 to 8 weeks from the day we start to first delivery

but, as daryl said, it's all about the "slush fund", and we would need to at least have 50% non-refundable deposits down on at least 15 units, before we started anything, so as to justify the time, and to make the $400 mark

it's not that i am not willing to do this - i just have my plate full, and this would be a very time consuming project - i've cranked out an awful lot of parts for this car, and the wife is getting more than a little annoyed at the "distraction" - consequently i can't get into something that won't get off the ground - been there done that

thanks - i just got tired of the motorsport unit folding under the car every time i hit a driveway or something, causing me to paint it nearly every time i drove it - this unit completely fixed that - i went through a long process to get here, but it was worth it to me - i think it looks like it belongs there, especially from the side, unlike the "afterthought lip thing" sandwiched between the bumper cover and the front apron

But, if you take yours off and use it as the mold donor, then you can get a new one during the first run!! at least, that's how I look at stuff I do! I quite frequently sell products right out of my living room knowing that all I have to do is order another one the next day...then I get a new one! Just a thought...tell Ayn not to hate me.
