Re-tightening the balance shaft belt
#81

I don't think the idler pulley can be adjusted properly if the tensioner is pointing the wrong way.

Whoa...what a roller coaster of a read.  Great thread!

I recently got my belts checked/adjusted (post new belts +1200 miles)  I am now experiencing the awful whining sound...mine whines and whines and does not go away.

Can someone point me over to the method of loosening the balance shaft belt?  Additionally, is driving with a whining belt a "no no"?  I understand that it will stretch and go away...but I have put 75 miles on her and it is still there. Frankly, the sound is embarrassing and I would like to take the time in the garage to loosen the belt ever so slightly to get it to the "sweet spot" sans P9201.

Many thanks.

Hi LongKhan

Do u have a copy of the WSM (workshop manual)?

Two of the BSB rollers have eccentric centers for the adjustment.

WSM specifies gap for the belt to just clear one of the rollers. I use the method that i recall Pete described on the forum for tightness:

One finger, deflect belt toward WP pulley. Just at the point where the belt becomes 'taut' you will be a millimeter or 2 from touching the WP pulley

Its a relatively loose belt

Thank you for the response MLB.  I recently purchased a pdf of the manual, but its a little overwhelming and since each page is an image i am not able to do some solid digital searching.  I have not seen a procedure for my level (novice).  I did not do the belts myself nor did I adjust them myself.  Taking it one step at a time...but hoping to be inclined to do it when the time comes in 38.5k.  I do think the adjustment is something I can take on now...with the depth of knowledge here and the manual I am sure ill be a "novice +" in no time.

Ill keep digging here and elsewhere...is the procedure similar to the 944?  Thank you.

Yup. But if the tension is set properly (not too tight), it should go away after a few minutes. Mine is completely silent for about 3 years now. It did the warm-up whine for weeks on end, but not as loud as when the belt was too tight.

If the Gates is silent from mile one, I'd choose the Gates from now on, eventhough the Conti prooves to be reliable so far.

Im not sure...I do know it wasnt whining for the first 1300 miles.  Ever since the adjustment it has been whining like a sewing machine.

See the procedure on clarks-garage. It is the same as the 944.

Also, watch this video.

If it wasn't whining before, it probably just means it's too tight.

At the waterpump pulley, try to twist the belt about 135 degrees with your indexfinger and thumb. Bet you can't make it.

Thank you all for the responses.

The video was very helpful.  It provided me with more confidence...especially without having the P9201.

Many thanks to the 27mm thin wrench from Paragon...I have successfully adjusted the balance belt/idler.

Now on to some feisty gremlns.
