22-year old Cat-back finally gave.
#1

And I need to replace it. Shop said they tried to weld, but no can do. I've tried to do an extensive search for a replacement, but either I'm looking in the wrong places, or there aren't many choices.

RSBarn - 2-1/2" $699 http://www.rsbarn.com/968headers.html

Paragon - FabSpeed 3" $895 http://www.paragon-products.com/Cat-Back...s951cb.htm (would this fit??)

Broadfoot - 3"/3-1/2" $750-900 http://www.broadfootracing.com/944___968_exhaust.htm (legal?)

Pelican - None

Any more insight? Thanks!!

22 years out of an after market catback is a nice run. The answer to your question depends a lot on the aesthetics ( some systems fit like crap, hang low, etc ) and on the sound you want ( some are louder than others, some have a drone, some sound ratty or high pitched, while others have a lower, smoother or muted note, and since sound is so subjective it's very tough to recommend one vs another ) My personal opinion is that the BB is the best ( complete catback ) out there in every respect , but if you want to build a customized catback from a combination or available retail components , check with Flash and with PorscheG96 on tne system they have, which I think is nothing short of outstanding ( may sound even a little better than the BB - gasp! did I just say that ?!, lol ) and you have the option of a fantastic pronounced sound, or a more civilized sound, the latter is flash's version.

But no matter what you select, DO NOT go above a 2.5" system - the low end and mid range torque loss will be material with anything over 2.5.

yes - i just put up a thread about cat-back. i would not buy any of the aftermarket units. i would build my own. better fit, cheaper, better sound.

Thank you, gents. Good info. I'm going hunting for that thread now, Flash. Bandit, I'm up in Norfolk now... a bit further away than I was a couple years ago.

BTW, the 22-year run was on the original system, not an after-market.

p.s. - i have a resonator here that has a couple thousand miles on it that somebody can have for the cost of shipping and a 6 pack of newcastle. i replaced it with a new one int he last round. i thought i was going to remove my system and put it in another car intact. then we ended up doing something different. then i ended up replacing my entire system anyway, leaving me with a perfectly good identical resonator.

OK, I am about to throw down on a cat-back (hopefully by the end of the week.) I have Pete lined up with a system from RSBarn (no header). I'm not sepcifically looking for performance gain (but if there were some, I'm ok with it!). I just want something that has a civilized note driving around town, but awakens when releasing the hounds (say, 4k RPM). NO ricer sound. Prefer a nice fit over everything else.

Recommendations on RSBarn vs. piecing a unit together? RSBarn is $699 and is the cheapest whole unit I have found.

Thanks for any input guys!

Pete put one on my white car and said it will sound like a sports car. I love the sound although people tell me they hear me coming. The one on the red car does not have the same sound. Doesn't matter because that is a track car so I don't get time to pay attention to the sound!

i don't like the fit of that system at all. the muffler hangs down way too low. the pipe needed 2 more bends, but cost prohibited that. also, the muffler starts restricting at 192hp (that figure came from the dynamax website). that's why it doesn't lose torque, but it costs top end potential. on a supercharged car, it was about 10hp. not sure how much on a normally aspirated car, but i would guess it is less loss, though i did blow the back end right off the muffler on my car when i was still normally aspirated. the sound is fairly mellow though, and probably the best i had heard until i got what i have now.

Flash I have an RS Barn exhaust I can give you if you'd like to keep the pieces on hand for anyone who might need them. I say 'pieces' because the Dynamax muffler is completely full of loose rusted metal pieces, but the other parts are fine.

When I bought my car, the shop that did the <acronym title='pre purchase inspection'>PPI</acronym> somehow just happened to have a pristine stock 968 exhaust sitting in their yard and sold it to me for 100 bucks. So I ditched the rusted out RSB unit and it's been in my garage ever since.

Hey Flash

Really interested in what you setup. Would you be able to post a link to the thread you mentioned?

i cannot stress this enough. it is not the muffler and resonator that make the system work. it's the mandrel bending. press bending (what most muffler shops do) causes a LOT of problems. i am working on something that might make everybody's life better, but i'm not there yet. i think i will have something more to tell in about 2 weeks.
