Quote:If I'm reading the wiring diagram correctly, looks  like It's wired into the circuit that controls the hood open warning indicator.
Fascinating... mine doesn't have a hood open warning light. Don't have a hood light anyway, that wiring was chucked a long time ago.

I replaced hood trunk and interior with LED.

White light instead of filament yellow is a nice 21st century upgrade.

Found them in two packs on eBay.

Will not melt plastic.

Yeah, installed my engine compartment light and it works great.  I like the white light. I'll have to work on the trunk and interior lights next.  10W, right?  Maybe next will be some neon for under the car....

I'm just curious because there was no follow up on this... could that schematic segment az968 was describing be for the alarm rather than the hood open warning light?  If not where does that light show itself?

WIldcat, I think I misread the schematic, with a quick glance at the wiring diagram the microswitch inside the hood latch (the part affixed to the car) ties to the alarm. If hood is opened with alarm set, the alarm goes off, it may also light the central warning light on the dash, i think that's what the schematic reads. I need to re-read the wiring diagram again in more detail..

Its a normally closed micro-switch, releasing the contact connects the circuit. The way the alarm is wired it can be taken out without affecting the system. I thought I knew the dash lights pretty well so I found your comment interesting and noting that there are some minor differences between years thought possibly I had overlooked something.  The "!" light does not come on, that's entirely a "systems" light. Tells you there's a major problem somewhere but not what exactly. The minimalist philosophy. (I rather like it but it has its drawbacks.)

Ok, I have to ask : why the heck does anyone need the engine bay's tiny lamp ( considering the drawbacks ) when you can buy a $ 5 LED flashlight with 10x the lumens of the hood light , which you can keep in the car for multiple other uses and just hang it to the hood when you need to work on your engine in pitch darkness ?

I disconnected my hood light years ago when it kept turning the alarm on while parked. Have never missed it. LED flashlights are something that I have everywhere in the house and all the vehicles. Can't have too many of these suckers. Actually the sucker is me. I buy them every time I'm in Lowes or Home Depot. I'm working on creating a new 12 step program for this addiction.

Hi Bob, my name is Dan and I'm an LEDaholic ...it all started with a clearance sale at Loews where I bought what I thought was a harmless flashlight not realizing that led ( no pun intended ) to many more to follow . As you , I have them all over the house, in all the cars, yada yada . I also disconnected both my 968 hood lights , but if I ever need it , even I, with my mechanical ineptitude think I can manage to plug it back in lol.

Yeah and the really insidious thing is, they keep coming up with new ones, they're not just the domed blob of plastic anymore, now you got square ones and ones that change color... its really a problem.  B)

Hello chaps.

I just put a video up on my 968's parasitic draw and faulty hood light issues. They turned out to be related.

check it out here: https://youtu.be/1AjktsnSbDk

if you want to stop the bonnet / hood light from staying on all the time, there is a little plastic part that the legs snap off and allow the microswitch to rotate.

part number 911 613 417 00

and you might break the clip when changing this little part, Clip 999 591 998 00

the Microswitch is not cheap at $60 :-964 613 431 01
